It just shows how a small change can lead to a big impact. I also don't think the midfielder was "clattered" as described in the 2nd example - I thought we won the ball fair and cleanly.

Well done us for drawing the first half against the mighty Bristol city

I thought we played well in the first half. I'd personally prefer Brown and Bannan further up the pitch, which suggests we still need a defensive midfielder.

The second half, despite their subtle tweak, showed to me our limitations playing 3-5-2, which does benefit us when we're on the front foot but as it's drawbacks too when we get pushed further back and our attacking players get isolated because our creative players are having to guard the defence from deep.

Personally, I think we'd be best off until we sign some more players to suit how we want to play, reverting to a variant of 4-3-3 or going with 4-2-3-1. We should play more to our own strengths instead of setting up to limit the opposition's strengths. That said, to be fair, it's been a tough start against three teams that should finish in the top ten.

Luongo was the best player on the park first half. Defensive midfield wasn't the problem.

The defence is exposed more than I’d like. Not saying that’s purely down to a DM but it plays a part.
If I were an opposition manager right now I’d make it a primary focus to target our left side of defence, whether that’s Van Aken or Börner and try and get them isolated and dragged out of position.

The recent stats for Tom Lees suggest he’s having to do a lot of defensive work. Whether that’s because we can’t hold onto the ball further up the pitch or the protection in front of the defence isn’t there.

Although I like Luongo and rate him, his strength is his box to box ability. I wouldn't say he's a defensive midfielder specialist, however I was referring more to the point in the blog and the OP about Brown one of our most creative players having to man mark one of their most creative players.

It had an effect in the first half, when we should have taken the lead but I think our attacking players would be better off if our creative players could get further forward more.

Personally, I think it's partly down to our formation that doesn't suit us and partly because we lack a suitable defensive midfielder and partly because we haven't suitably replaced Murphy.

Yeah, all those GIFs show how Bakinson was being tightly marked... as was every other member of their midfield. we gave them enough space to get the ball then bit into the challenges to try and nick the ball off them. It worked for large spells of the game but we didn't have enough attacking force to make the most of it which unfortunately invited pressure onto us.

I thought their kid played well but the slight tactical tweak ultimately amounted to 'pass it someone else', a 'tactical tweak' we occasionally make when passing it to not-Bannan.

Other tweak they made was Rowe getting into box more often. We were not picking him up and he was spare man.

Loungo did well got some decent tackles in and covered alot of ground. Our tempo dropped off alot in second half and midfield became static. Suggesting we struggle to do tempo for 90 minutes.
