On a Saturday and Sunday there are probably 1000's of kids of all age groups playing local grass routes football in Sheffield - I will be very surprised if there are not a lot of very good players, we are missing out on because our scout are in Liverpool or Manchester watching their reserves play. But in the long run it migjt be cheaper to get your pl cast offs..look at deli we got from city..hes been there years..they put all the effort in and we get him for next to nowt..then look at jack stobbs..he was with us since he was about 10..then gets released when hes about 22..havin never played for us..whats the point in that?? The problem with the club though is the lack of quality coaches and the players development we won the under 18 development league with Preston, Stobbs, Clarke, Hirst etc and where are all these players now they left the club because once players get to 18 at the club we have no plan for them. They should be sent out on loan to get first team experience the 2 players we did this with in Clare and Thorniley actual came back and got in the first team but we for what ever reason are so so bad at developing good talent into good players. Not every player will made it but you then make money loaning them out and selling them on to other teams above and below us in the league structure. Look locally Sheff utd, Barnsley, Doncaster all have brought through a lot of talent in their teams over the last 5 years - if you look at the current England team a lot of the are Yorkshire product. Why are other teams in our region producing players when we are producing now.

Stobbs had plenty of loans that didnt go very well..people allways scream 'get them out on loan'..maybe league 1 and 2 teams would rather have a seasoned lower league journeyman than a spotty 17 year old

Unfortunately they have had 40 chances to get the Academy right. In 40 years SWFC Academy has failed to produce a single regular Premier League player. To keep using a failed model year in year out and expect it to produce someone is ridiculkous. It is time for a change.
Ronnie Starling
If and when Monk gets the sack, I wonder if we will also get rid of the chancers that work at the academy? Once again the u23s and u18s are bottom of their respective leagues which makes you wonder what on earth the coaches and scouts are doing these days. Other teams in our locality have historically performed much better in recruiting youngsters so why can't we?

Stunning but true. We had a good period under Big Jack and Sgt Wilko when three Premier League standard players came through: Mel Sterland Perter Shirtliffe Mark Smith At that time we also had some good support players who emerged and helped us to get to the top tier: Grant, Taylor, Pearson and Oliver. But since then it has been an appalling drought. Particularly with Covid 19 now is time imo to reward this failure by scrapping the Academy. Four years ago Brentford scapped their Age 8 top Age 20 Academy and introduced an "Elite Development Squad" for players 20-23 in age. They then scouted youngsters around Europe to fill the Elite Squad and contuinue to do so. Time for SWFC to take this decisive action. Far too sensible. There seems to be very little land round into which the current facilities could be expanded.

Manwë
We don't have the patience anymore, it's depressing. It's been 20 years since we dropped from the PL and all been looking for is some quick fix, get rich quick return to the PL rather than put in place long term plans that will help our club eventually. Look at the Blunts. Historically the smaller club, smaller revenue with more difficulty to attract talent. So they invested heavily in their youth setups. We just went and bought whoever looked good. It's a cultural thing, and we're not ready to take the long road. Our academy and junior teams represent the investment in them. Want quality? Then you have to pay for it. gurujuan
I’m not so sure, and a lot would depend on what you replace it with. It’s a bit harsh to say, the development sides are struggling again, they are, but prior to that, there’s been some improvement Years of neglect have meant that we haven’t produced the players we would have liked, but since DC arrived, there has been progress Not enough though, I’ll agree. There are specific problems related to this season’s performances, not least the managers insistence that the development sides play the same way as the first team. That’s fine if you’ve settled on a system that improves you as a team, and at this level particularly, as individuals. The problem is, it isn’t working. The first team are struggling to get to grips with the system, so it’s no surprise it’s not working further down the chain. A parent of one of the U23 lads says, they are unhappy about the changes, and it’s all about getting the ball up to the strikers as quickly as possible, often bypassing the midfield. Neither the first team, nor the U23s have a proper centre forward, so even that tactic is a bit pointless. It’s more than that though, it’s hindering their development as players
