Time to scrap the SWFC Academy

Recommended Posts

For context, Brentford have been in the Championship playoffs twice, the same amount of times as us.

Not suggesting we're run better, because I dont believe that one bit, but lets stop holding them up as some sort of pinnacle of football evolution.

Using their (albeit very financially rewarding methods) they've also achieved absolutely nothing.

That fascination with Brentford again. A team that's spent the last 12 years in the championship (after promotion from league one) yes, a fine example to follow.

For a club Brentfords size that is a noteworthy achievement. Also came within 90 mins of being a Premier League Club a few months ago.
Probably equivalent for Wednesday would be get promoted and qualify for Europe within next 4-5 years.

But I shake my head at the thoughts of scrapping the academy. I agree with reforming it but getting rid of it all together!?!?

We have a duty to try and find local talent. Club already has less and less to do with local people as it is.

Disagree hugely with this. They are traditionally a club that belongs 1-2 divisions below this league. They've levelled up their club on and pff the pitch dramatically aided by a remarkable transfer strategy. They've been able to cement themselves as a Premiership ready club with a new stadium to boot with an admirable self sufficiency from their recruitment model.

If we scaled Sheffield Wednesday up to the same successes as Brentford then we'd be on par with a Wolves or Leicester.

I'm not saying we should be them or that everything we are doing is wrong because we aren't doing what Brentford are but to dismiss the way they've levelled up as a club just because they haven't made the Prem yet would be pretty narrow minded.

Ny Owl in another thread makes the salutory comment that the SWFC Academy has failed to produce a top tier player in 40 years. Stunning but true.

We had a good period under Big Jack and Sgt Wilko when three Premier League standard players came through:

Mel Sterland

Perter Shirtliffe

Mark Smith

At that time we also had some good support players who emerged and helped us to get to the top tier: Grant, Taylor, Pearson and Oliver.  But since then it has been an appalling drought.

Particularly with Covid 19 now is time imo to reward this failure by scrapping the Academy.

Four years ago Brentford scapped their Age 8 top Age 20 Academy and introduced an "Elite Development Squad" for players 20-23 in age.  They then scouted youngsters around Europe to fill the Elite Squad and contuinue to do so.

Time for SWFC to take this decisive action.

WTF: really. Step backward for me. Some good youngsters coming through at the moment also.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Something has to change.

Indeed its just a good job we have learnt from the disaster of Jordan Rhodes no more bring in players on £40-50,000 a year with big fees involved...……….

Oh wait a minute I may have heard in the press lol

very strange time to start this thread when at least 8 academy products have appeared in the first team in the first 6 games of the season

Also rate them or not but all the below played Premier league football either for us or someone else after coming through our youth system as well as the previous mentioned

Kevin Pressman

Graham Hyde

John Newsome

David Wetheral

Ryan Jones

Steve Haslam

Del Geary

Leigh Bromby

Alan Quinn

Why would anyone would expect the academy to be well run, when the rest of the club has been such a shambles for so long ?

The club needs overhauling from top to bottom.

Commercially, financially, and structurally.

Only then will things like the academy start to bear fruit.

Just as our academy starts to produce players who look like the step up to Championship football might not be beyond them wouldn't be the moment to scrap it, in my opinion.

Didn’t Leeds bring through Cook, Byram, Taylor, Mowatt and Kelvin Phillips whilst they had GFH and mad man Cellino in charge, the later wanting to shut down the academy?

Not everything that we do wrong is down to Chansiri.

like I said rate them or not that isnt really the issue is it

But obviously somebody did rate them for them to have played, also the majority would have got in our team over the last couple of years

We've been poorly run way before DC.

DC has just wasted more money than all the others combined.

The problem we have in our area are that both Sheffield United and Leeds United have academies that have a strong history of producing players who go on to bigger and better things.

Until we can match that (probably we never will) then our academy doesn’t serve us well in its current guise.

Not sure what the answer is though.
