0wl18
What does everyone make of the antics at the weekend? For those who don’t know, Kieran Gibbs was shown a red card on the stroke of half time and, rightly so. Bilic approached Dean as the whistle blew and, simply asked him to have a look at the challenge before the Red Card was shown. He felt there was a foul in the build up to the incident. Their paths were crossing due to location of their dressing rooms, it’s not a case of Bilic running on to remonstrate. Mike Dean simply tells him to go away. Doesn’t even entertain him. Bilic reacts angrily at the blatant disrespect Dean shows him and, ends up with a red card. Many are saying how stupid it is of Bilic to approach him, he should know what Mike Dean is like etc etc. Mike Dean’s actions are exactly the reason why referees aren’t respected. They demand respect but don’t give it. If you treat someone with a complete lack of respect, you have no basis to demand it yourself. It’s human decency regardless of what any rule says. All Mike Dean has to do, was simply say ‘I’ll have a look at it again but, I didn’t feel their was anything in it.’ I think the major difference between officiating in Football and, other sports is partly down to the lack of mutual respect.
Dan™
I haven't seen it, but I don't think much good can come from a manager discussing decisions with the referee during a game and Dean is well within his rights to remove himself from any potential claims of being influenced by the opposition should he subsequently make a bad call in their favour. Nothing the manager has to say should ever influence a decision or the referee's thinking in any circumstance, so anything Bilic had to say can wait until after the final whistle.

torryowl
i'm sure if mike dean approached bilic as he was making a substitiution that dean didnt agree with and asked him does he want to reconsider i very much doubt he'd give him respectful of a reply . .......why should dean . edmontonowl
Bilic was wrong. In his post-match interview he came across as the injured party but if he'd have shown some respect for the game and the officials he wouldn't have been red carded Dean was right

Does this so called substitution have a direct impact on Mike Deans ability to officiate the game? No. It doesn’t. The red card had a direct impact on Bilic’s teams chances of winning the game, 2 entirely different scenarios. All Bilic has done is asked him to have a look at a decision, I’d argue it happens every other game in some regard, probably not on the pitch but, the 4th official has both teams in his ear for 90 minutes. Regardless of what it will achieve, it’s 1 human trying to have a civil conversation with another, to be simply told to go away is down right disrespectful. Next time Dean receives a torrent of abuse, he wants to remember the way dealt with that situation and, he might get some understanding of why officials within the game are criticised and, abused like they are. Ask yourself why Rugby officials rarely receive torrents of abuse, or Cricket umpires for that matter. I’ll tell you why, they give clear concise reasoning when they make a decision. They don’t blow their whistle and, hide behind a set of rules. You can have a respectful conversation with either. They treat both players and, managers in a way they’d like to be treat themselves. It’s basic human nature, treat others like you wish to be treated yourself.

When your work colleague asks you a question, tell them to simply go away and let me know what their response is. Respect is a 2 way street. If we can’t have any form of communication with a match official then the game has gone. The officials should absolutely be respected however, name me another walk of life where respect is demanded, not earned.

I completely agree with your point and, the red card had already been issued to Gibbs, there’s no changing that. All Mike Dean has to say is, ‘I didn’t think it was a foul and, even it it was, you can’t excuse Kierans actions’ If he was fearful of being on camera and, looking like he was being influenced, he could have told Bilic to have a chat with him after the game. There’s a million and one ways Mike Dean could have handle that situation without being an disrespectful arse.
Binky Griptite
"Sorry Slaven, you know I can't talk to you at half time, we'll have a chat after full time at the appropriate time and I'll listen to you. Right now I'll have no choice but to send you off if you don't back down and walk back to your dressing room" Simple as that. Respectful and if Bilic continued justified in sending him off. Arthur Bach
Not buying that, in fact I think its nonsense. Since when was football officiated by committee? Especially during the 90 minutes. Fergie had the ear of refs on a weekly basis, and we had a loathesome period 10-15 years ago when refs would routinely refer to players by their nicknames. Also hate comparisons to rugby and cricket. Both inferior sports.
Beighton Owl 87
Gabby Agbonlahor was on Talksport discussing this yesterday and claimed Mike Dean shows no respect towards any players and its discussed amongst players a lot who share the same opinion. Apparently he wants to be centre stage and tells players to get lost etc when they approach him.

It's questioning your judgement with the ultimate aim to influence your decisions from that point in their favour. Isn't there a video knocking about where Dean is sending someone off and says "Off you pop" whilst pointing to the tunnel Can imagine him saying that in a Sunday league game ! Putney
Very little sympathy for players, whether past or present, complaining about match officials. They're given such little respect and are constantly abused by players and staff and this happens right the way from youth football and Sunday league to the very top. Doesn't happen in any other sport.
Adem Poric
Mike Dean sent off Kilgallon in the Derby a few years ago. Seems alright to me.
