Wednesday - V - Watford OMDT

Top work Snoots old bean. Surely you could dig out the keys to the old camper van rather than suffer the mock up Halloween set from Mr. H?

Acid test indeed. I believe if we show just the same grit, skill and determination as Cardiff we'll do just fine. Give those yellow bellies a true welcome to the Championship!!

Things That Watford is famous for.

1. Maureen Lipman started her acting career at the Watford Palace in 1967, though she was actually from Hull. Her main claim to fame was in her role as “Beattie” in the BT adverts way back in the day. You may recall her world famous line “Oh, you got an ology”

2. Despite working with the likes of music heavyweights Emeli Sande, Cheryl Cole, Lily Allen and Sam Smith, Naughty Boy still lives in West Watford with his parents. He is still paying £20 per week board. His first recording studio was in their garden shed.

3. Characters Will McKenzie and Simon Cooper better known as half of the Inbetweeners, live in Edinburgh Drive, Abbots Langley. Presumably, as a couple. Troy Deeney is their football fwend.

4. EastEnders’ Carter family may have moved to Walford, but they used to live in Watford.

5. Watford has strong links to the Fender Telecaster Bass. Barry Midford Millership requested the unique commission from EME in Queen’s Road, and the rest, as they say, is history. I have no idea what this means.

6. School scenes from movie The History Boys were filmed in Watford Grammar School for Boys and Watford Grammar School for Girls.

7. Comedian Robin Ince was born in Chenies village where he is known as the Guvnor of Chenies.

8. Watford was recently referenced in television sitcom Benidorm – When Donald and Jacqueline Stewart revealed to the Dyke family, who hail from St Albans, that they are part of the Watford Swingers’ Association. I’m not sure if the Watford Swingers Association actually exists but on hearing this, Watford sounds a bit more interesting place than Rochdale.

9. Scenes from television show The Demon Headmaster were filmed at both Rickmansworth and Sarratt.

10. Peep Show’s Super Hans aka Matt King was born in Watford.

11. Nick Leeson, who brought down Barings Bank, was a former pupil of Parmiter’s School. He is now Watford FC’s Director of Finance.

12. Simon Le Bon, lead singer of Duran Duran, was born in Watford. He’s since moved to Blackpool and dances on the sand.

13. Mary Portas used to live in Bushey. Research tells me she was a woman David Cameron hired to report on the future of Britain’s High Streets.

14. Former children’s laureate Michael Rosen attended Watford Grammar School for Boys in the 1960s when they were not filming The History Boys.

15. Watford has made huge contributions to the printing industry. Rotary photogravure was a technique which was first used in Watford to reproduce very fine, high quality fine art prints and then it went on to be used to produce colour magazines. All the ladies’ colour magazines, like Woman’s Weekly and Woman’s Own, were all printed in Watford, as well as most of the colour supplements for the Sunday newspapers. You should remember this next time you are reading and admiring your ladies’ magazines.

16. Watford played host to Herts Pride’s first county-wide event in August last year.

17. Melanie C aka Sporty Spice lived in Watford for a spell. Before fame beckoned that is. Then she found somewhere more interesting.

18. Sue Cleaver, better known to Corrie fans as the put-upon Eileen Grimshaw, was born in Watford. This provided a stepping stone to future opportunities in the adult film industry, later appearing in 1983’s award winning film “Come on Eileen”

19. Comedian Eddy Brimson is a life long Watford FC fan. As is Elton John. Just in case you didn’t know.

20. Paul Carrack of Squeeze and Mike & The Mechanics fame lives in Chorleywood. But is actually one of us, a Sheffield lad.

21. The grand staircase of Cassiobury House was removed to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, when the house demolished in 1927.

22. The town hall’s interior staircase that sweeps up to the main council chamber is listed in its own right, as a prime example of Art Deco construction. So we have now established that Watford are famous for staircases.

23. In the video for Elton John’s Step into Christmas, he holds up his Watford AFC supporter’s club membership card. Respect!

24. Grade II protected Jackson’s Jewellers in The Parade is said to have its own ghost – a man in Elizabethan dress who passes through walls. Not to be confused with our very own Bazza Bannan who ghosts through and passes through balls.

25. The One Bell pub, adjacent to St Mary’s Church, holds the oldest existing licence dating back to 1750. It used to be called the Two Bells pub until a visit by gypsies in 1814.

26. Bushey church St James has been home to weddings, christenings and funerals for a number of EastEnders’ characters. Chosen because it is the last remaining church in Watford with all its bells still intact.

27. Kings Langley was the home of the makers of Ovaltine and the listed factory facade is now all that is left and still stands alongside the railway line among a new housing development. The Ovaltine factory itself has recently been converted into a series of flats and duplexes. This is proper history, enjoyed reading that.

28. In the 1960s, RAF Bovingdon was used in the production of four World War II films, The War Lover (1962); 633 Squadron (1964) The Battle of Britain (1968) and Mosquito Squadron (1969).

It was also used to film parts of the flying car scenes in the James Bond film The Man With the Golden Gun starring Roger Moore. On television it served as the location for at least one black and white episode of The Avengers The Hour That Never Was, starring Patrick Macnee and Diana Rigg featuring Gerald Harper and Roy Kinnear, as well as the 1980 Blake's 7 episode The Harvest of Kairos as the surface of the planet Kairos.

More recently Fury, starring Brad Pitt, Was filmed at Bovingdon Airfield.

29. The Who performed regularly in Watford and Carpenders Park in 1964, specifically The Trade Union Hall and The Mine.

30. Kings Langley was once the location of Kings Langley Palace, a royal palace of the Plantagenet kings of England. Now Rudolf Steiner School is set on the site of the palace.

31. The 12th century parish church of All Saints' houses the tomb of Edmund of Langley (1341–1402), the first Duke of York.

32. Pope Adrian IV, the only Englishman ever to have become Pope, was born as Nicholas Breakspear in Abbots Langley around the year 1100. Therefore, Abbots Langley village includes a number of roads named after its famous son (Adrian, Breakspear, Pope), and at one time included activities of the Brakspear brewery. Impressive. Why was all the interesting stuff left until last?

33. Watford is referenced in the following songs: The Prisoner by The Clash, Albion by Babyshambles, Lesson One by Just Jack, Watford John by Badfinger, I Love London by Crystal Fighters, and Don’t Sit Down When Elton’s Around by The Massive

34. Kings Langley has been temporarily changed to Kings Landing to celebrate the latest DVD release of Game of Thrones. Old Premier League habits die hard, anything for a few more quid.

35. Cartoonist Dum Doodles, who has been responsible for creating artwork for musicians including Stooshe and Chris Brown, is a former pupil of Rudolf Steiner. Well worth mentioning.

36. Elton John performed his first gig at The Namaste Lounge Pub, Northwood Hills.

And not a lot of people know that.

Brilliant OP again, Snoots, but the problem is I'm actually getting drawn into the drama of the storyline like a kid waiting for next week's copy of Score'n'Roar.

Only slightly less interesting is the match today. Will home games "advantage" count for anything, seeing as how we will be playing in front of almost entirely deserted concrete banking? It's just like the 1974/5 season again!😄

Well, that's my attempt at humour over for the day/week.

You could argue it's an advantage to our team they do NOT have the fans watching at home in the stadium, not exactly been cheering them on last season so maybe they lower their shoulders without us there but rathering booing and jeering at I Ifollow 😉

Watford also were the first club to "scientificaly" analyse the long ball game (some ex RAF old git with a clipboard, I think) and under Howard W we successfully copied it (hoof the ball up in the air and bounce it off McCullough's slippery dome for anybody to run onto and score for us). Wilkinson once told a radio reporter , when we played Watford, that the ball would have to be given an aspirin at half time. Nearest he ever got to humour, as I recall! Very taciturn man!

Can anyone advise re ifollow tomorrow? Another thread said there was a deadline of 4pm yesterday to subscribe and I queried it but didn’t get a response. Only asked just cause before you could pay for the match pass about 10 mins before

The deadline was an arbitrary one for season ticket holders. I did mine after 4pm and still got my code. I think they were trying to prevent overloading the system.

Are we overestimating Watford?

They look like a club in turmoil to me with several players wanting away/ unavailable
They also had great difficulty breaking down a pretty average Middlesbrough defence in their first  league game last week.

Seems a good time to remind them what the Championship is like.

We hoofed it up more into areas of the pitch instead of aiming for a particular player, wasn't quite so basic as Watford's interpretation of the long game.   The ball did spend a lot of time in the air though.
