There were plenty of bigger problems on that team than him. I never understand people who reach such a distinct judgement on whether Sibon was excellent or terrible. He was somehow both and neither at the same time; the very definition of that overused phrase - enigma. For a couple of years after our relegation he was the best of a rather motley group. As for the branding of players as crap because they were on a relegated team, you should take a look at our squad from 1990. Several legends right there.

I think you’re going massively off topic on that one. the thread is about players who were too good for us and it was suggested that he was. When he was brought in to score goals in the premier league and we went down partly (but a fairly big reason) because one of our two new star strikers couldn’t get in the team it doesn’t make him too good for us. None of the team in the 1990 season have been named as too good for us but many of them miles better than Sibon Edited September 14, 2020 by Bluesteel
pazowl55
Only two players I can think off that were head and shoulders above those around them were Carbone and Di Canio.
djorkaeff
If we had a thread ‘players who have signed for us- who were NOT good enough’ we could break all thread records...
Emerson Thome
Ellis Rimmer. Bottom of the league when we signed him. Won 8 and drew 1 of the last 10 games to stay up by a point and then won the league the next two years running.

Rogers
I think this can only be answered with the assumption that the player in question was better than the rest of the team by a long way. Mentioning likes of Nilsson and Waddle, is an insult to Hirst, Sheridan, etc. They were a good team that performed to a high level. Di Canio and Carbone are the stand outs in my life time. I was gutted when he was sold Ross Barkley - He was tipped to be the new Lampard/Gerrard so was something of a surprise when we signed him on loan. Showed glimpses of his potential but was much younger back then. Still chipped in with 4 or 5 goals if my memory is correct Scott Carson - He was superb during a loan spell, a class above. Much younger back then and was considered a future England International Can anyone think of any others? Neil Mellor only player I remember hitting 20 in a season

IWEDFM
Some people are so dim and after 9 pages still didn't understand my OP. It's not about players being too good or big to play for us but about players we had who were better than where we were at the time. How can it be so hard to grasp? IWEDFM
I hold my hands up though as the title of the thread could have been worded better but still I have explained what I meant numerous times on previous pages
OohAahGuyWhittingham
Chris Marsden really stood out in that team at the time. One of those players that always seemed a step ahead and just made the game look so easy.
