Players we signed who were too good for us

Recommended Posts

Kenwyne Jones - A relative unknown when we signed him but 7 goals in 7 matches at League One level proved he was far too good for where we were at the time

Madjid Bougherra - A rock at the back and those darting runs into the opposition half were exceptional. I was gutted when he was sold

Ross Barkley - He was tipped to be the new Lampard/Gerrard so was something of a surprise when we signed him on loan. Showed glimpses of his potential but was much younger back then. Still chipped in with 4 or 5 goals if my memory is correct

Scott Carson - He was superb during a loan spell, a class above. Much younger back then and was considered a future England International

Can anyone think of any others?

Gerald Sibon -  would have been pure dynamite with a better team around him
You could  see the absolute resignation in his play every time a team mate messed up

Agree

Sibon was a class above. I found it strange at the time that none of the big clubs came in for him, unless they did and I can't remember

Glenn Whelan - stuck playing with players playing above their level in the centre, the likes of Kenny Lunt, Yoann Folly, Craig Rocastle.

But kept us competitive, used to be our creative, box to box, and defensive midfielder all in one I thought.

As good as Whelan was for us i'm not sure if he'd make the list to be honest

Turner - keeper we had on loan from Everton think?

I even thought the likes of Tudgay could’ve done better in a better side

Some good shouts

Antonio definitely - you only have to look at the player he is today

Yes, I can remember that keeper. Iain Turner

Whilst a big fan of Hectors in his time here, from what I saw on Saturday he is going to need to improve if he wants to remain in the Premiership.

How was Ben Sahar too good for us? The others are debatable too

Strange thread all round
