At some point, they would have to stick and twist. In the end, they didn't really do either. They spent money, but it was either to replace someone or just add numbers to the squad. Not one signing improved the overall quality of the starting first XI; it was very much quantity over quality imo. I think Brewster was bought with the idea he was a genuine upgrade on what they had - a quick, very highly rated striker. He's been an absolute disaster. Don't fall for the line he was bought solely on potential. Dem Blades ain't spending 23 million on potential. Wilder's recruitment bombed as it had largely done in the summer prior. Difference is, those stalwarts of his were able to step up and bridge the gap. This season, any aura they had previously had was completely gone. Teams had largely worked them out. I know they lost O'Connel early on which was a blow, but if all your attacking quality is scuppered by one injured CB, then perhaps the system wasn't quite as amazing as people made of it? I don’t even think they needed to kick on. They’d obviously massively overachieved in 19/20 when any finish above 18th would have celebrated as a success. They needed another season of consolidation, their glass ceiling had already been reached. Staying in the division was the priority rather than kicking on. Looks like they’ve failed on both accounts. In decades to come I hope to be able to look back and say 'I was there'! Sadly I didn't see in person any of their epic games which resulted in them scoring 39 goals in 38 league games last season or the unforgettable times they have given the football world this season. Shame.

SiJ
Modern football clubs are often quite wary of managers becoming too powerful. Wilder was probably one of the most powerful manager's in the country. Seemed like like there was a bit of old school set up where he appeared to be in charge of most things regarding the playing side, recruitment etc. As pointed out above, he was also very, very good at getting the vast majority of fans on his side, certainly your bang average Dem Blades fan. It's pretty much a cult of personality with him, it really is. I'd go as far to say that Wilder has become bigger than the football club and that was through design not accident. I struggle to recall another manager - who has won a miserable 4 league games all season - get quite such an easy ride and slavish coverage. Yes, he was very good for them, but I don't see why that makes him almost immune from criticism and the reality of the situation. He was more than happy to accept the accolades and financial rewards as they stormed up the divisions, but the moment thing went wrong he went out of his way to blame everyone but himself and seemingly most have fallen for this. 2
