Diego Maradona came closest to signing for Sheffield United, for whom the Argentinian would have played in the late 1970s had it not been for the stinginess of the Blades' board. In 1978, the United manager Harry Haslam watched the 17-year-old Maradona in action on a scouting trip to Argentina and was so impressed he immediately arranged a £200,000 deal. But the transfer fell through when the Second Division club failed to stump up extra cash on top of the fee, so Haslam instead signed Maradona's countryman, the River Plate midfielder Alex Sabella, for £160,000. Sadly, although Sabella wowed the Bramall Lane crowds, he could not prevent the Blades sliding into the Third Division in 1978-79. Sabella and was offloaded to Leeds United for £400,000 in 1980 and United slipped quietly into the Fourth Division later that season. Meanwhile, Diego …

The version I heard was Haslam slept on it and in the morning decided on Sabella and signed him that morning.

I thought they could have bought maradonna for £250k but wouldn't pay it?... that said it is a long time ago

They were offered him same time as they signed Sabella in 1978. Believe the asking was 100k for a then 17 year old.

No Henderson

No O'Connolly

No Flecky

No striker whatsoevery

Spineless.  Just hope WBA turn up at weekend.

Yes, it's the big one tonight.

Lose that and they're as good as down, even at this stage of the season.

Morale would be in tatters.

I’ve criticised Klopp recently for his outspoken nature regarding the injuries.

He was selecting his key players week in week out then whinging they were getting injured.

He’s paid to MANAGE the squad. He knows what the expectation is, he knows how crammed the schedule is yet, he wasn’t rotating his players nearly enough.

He did it today and, fair play to him. It’s his job to whey up whether it’s better to risk Salah for a game and, potentially lose him for a month or, rest him for the likes of Minamino.

Everyone is in the same boat and, they all knew the fixture congestion was going to be a struggle when they voted through the 3 subs. Why didn’t they sign 2-3 more squad players if they weren’t happy?

Seems like old uriah wilder has upset King klopp who cannot be questioned. I assume he complained about the extra subs that some teams wanted, humble clubs like the pigs can't afford to have 40 million pound subs you know. Be funny if this turns into a proper war of words between Mr passive aggressive and the most humble man on the planet. Can't stand either of em.

You’ll be having a little wager on the pigs then, no doubt?

If I were a betting man I'd put my money on the pigs tonight. As I'm not, I won't be. But yeah, got a feeling the Internet will be magically switched back on in Sheffield round about 10pm. And within 10 minutes of the whistle they'll be poking their snouts into this thread.

I nearly was going to but I quit getting few years ago after many burns

Nailed on tonight though. They really are due a win and we aren't that lucky that they lose again unfortunately. They're already pretty far behind where Derby was at this stage
