Thoughts on Matt Penney

Recommended Posts

Don’t know why we persist with 3-5-2 if we don’t have natural wingbacks. If we have to then Penney would be a must to start over Oddjob and Harris in that position. Sooner we played him as a LB in a 4 with a midfield three, and Brown behind a front two. Lees is currently a wasted shirt in a back three and Palmer would make up a solid back 4. Monk’s tactical ability is very poor, as is the club’s ability to get players in to fill obvious gaps.

Another thing Regarding Penney is that he used to be known for his free kick and dead ball deliveries.

Why not giving him a chance at free kick duty, not like we are scoring from them right now?!

Bacause Bannan likes to take all corners and free kicks and he's captain now so nobody else will get a chance. Bannan just isn't very good at them, we do need a dead ball specialist. I thought Murphys corners last year were a definite step up last season.

I think it did do him good too, just think he could have done even better here and so could we.

Fox was consistently poor for us and by the time most of the other players around him had dropped to a similar level to him it made it look like he’d improved. He hadn’t he just didn’t stand out as a weak link anymore because we had 11 weak links. Never shirked a tackle though and always gave 100 percent so we’ve had much worse. Stoke are over the moon they have signed a proper left back so they are in for a shock.

Fox had a good season last year.

Penney has great potential and looks like he could do very well. Don't build him up too far just yet, he still needs to gain a lot more experience to reach his potential. Give him game time, see how he does but be prepared to rest him if his form drops. I'm still not convince by him defensively and most teams will target him to see if he is a weak link. How he copmes through that will be interesting to watch.

He does seem to still be a level headed lad which helps

Palmer rwb penney left. Two natural players for the role. Odubajo is too raw, doesn’t seem to have a footballing brain and Harris can’t play on the left. Cuts in too much and takes the space of the midfielders. We should want players that deliver a ball quickly with quality and I believe penney is that. He was class when he first got in the team, my villa mate still raves about his performance at their place when he played.

Agree with this completely.  Palmer is now good enough to play down the right side for an international team.  And Penney will create more chances than any other wing back in our squad. Might be weaker defensively but that’s why you have 3 centre backs who should be doing most of the defending in the box.

(Snooker) cue Harris and Odubajo to start on Saturday then

I think if there is an advantage in playing 352 then it is allowing Penny to play wing back rather than full back.

He is a natural left wing back and our strikers, especially Rhodes would love his crosses.

However I am pretty sure it will be Harris left, Palmer right at Cardiff.

I remember that cracker he scored against the Blunts at the pig farm, and thought we had a player on our hands here

He's not really cracked on since then though

The year in Germany playing regularly will have done him the world of good

I hope the Penny's dropped and we start to see the player that he's capable of being

He's got all the attributes

Just a bloke, who used up all his luck in one go when he met his wife.

I remember him as an outstanding LB, and can understand the thoughts of playing him as a LWB because he ran all up & down the left side, dribbling, not passing.  I always wondered why he got  put out on loan, because he looked to be the best LB Wednesday had seen in years, and didn't look like he wasn't ready.  What we on Owlstalk think doesn't really matter though, what Monk thinks does. Hope to see him starting against Cardiff this weekend.

Thought he did really well coming on against Walsall, but it’s a far cry from having to perform week in week out in the Championship.

He was pretty much absolved of and defensive duty and Walsall struggled against a laboured SWFC  side with zero attacking threat.

We’ve seen him start really well before and then his performances go off a cliff once the pressure is on, so I’m certainly not going to go overboard at this stage.

It seems like he’ll get some good opportunities this season, so we should at least find out if he can cut it consistently at this level

I do like the balance a left footer gives playing on their natural side.

His performance vs Walsall deserves a start on Saturday, Harris moving over to RWB.

Think wing back suits him, CB cover affords him less defensive responsibility and licence to get forward.

Looks good going foreward, alas like Reach he cant tackle or snuff a threat out,hel be a liability under pressure, hes normally up the pitch when the threat comes and like Boerner hes happy to leave the defending to somebody else

Not sure about the borner bit but I'd go with the rest.....hopefully the spell  in germany has improved him defensively as going forward he brings something to the team .

From what I saw, a couple seasons ago, he wasn't just dribbling down the left side, he was knocking the opposition out of the way, on the way, no need to tackle. He didn't snuff a threat, because  he didn't even deign to notice a threat, threats were neutralized, by himself.  Glad to see him back from the "red light district" of Deutschland.

To be fair to Bannan, it is his ball and he's the only one who brings a new one.

It was a present from his grandad.

Always liked Penney from when he first started playing in the first team.

He just has something about him and I was disappointed we didn’t persevere with him at the time, but in hindsight I think a loan away from us to get match time and build his confidence has done him good.

Hoping he will be an important player for us this season.
