Walsall - Wednesday OMDT

There's nothing worse than having to rely on the OMDT to follow a match.

If we're not winning after 15 minutes, certain posters will have you believing we're the worst team ever to grace a football pitch; when we score you'll believe we're the second coming of Brazil '70; and that's to say nothing of the 'comedians' who post 'GOAL!' or 'FFS' every so often regardless of what's actually happening in the game.

:duntmatter:

prob united fans set up bots to post stuff haha

One can only speculate on the level of abuse towards the manager had we in fact lost.

whatever happened to that old “ support the team” ethos?

Do we think that, had the team torn into Walsall at 100 mph in the first competitive game, there might not be the strongest side available for Cardiff?

They won. They played at less than full speed. Good. No fans were injured or out of pocket. Excellent.

Well done Garry Monk and the Wednesday Boys!

Not unexpected that playing without strikers constituted zero goals.

Reach is not a striking option under any circumstances but he needs to get his mojo back somehow. Looked completely different side with Brown supporting a front two.

Windass looks a shoe in for number 10 / support striker role with excellent movement. Just need a number nine now. Rhodes did nothing after coming on and I fear another season if high wages for no goals from him.

Positives for me were Penney (albeit vs L2 opposition). His forward play has always been a positive but a better side will test his defensive capabilities more. Brown looks a find but must be played in that advanced midfield role with Bannan sitting behind and Luongo as defensive mid unless we sign someone else for that role. Iorfa looked comfortable and Harris would have hd at least one assist had there been. Striker on the pitch when he put that lovely cross straight cross the box.

little more to say on the others. Not massively challenged and all working without striking options until closing stages

Saw a lot of positives watching the match, but also some concerns; the missing striker option being one, hopefully Kachunga can solve that one.

Too much holding up and using the defensive option of a back pass, which lets the opposition get back and close up shop, making it even more difficult to find our way through their defence.

When Penney came on, and with some of Brown's initiatives, we use pace and push forward, opening up Walsall and it's simply margins that Penney's crosses don't connect with a Wednesday player and we score in normal time. Or what happened when Brown got through alone on keeper and makes something like a shot across the goal.

Also positive to see us actually go for the ball in duels, headers, etc. and see our defense has resorted to the no nonsense approach of clearing the ball up the pitch when pressed at the back. Not saying we should hoof it when we're in control and moving up, but when pressed, you don't want defenders making poor back passes or even worse, dribbling and being dispossessed.

Cammy confident in goal too, don't think I felt concerned Walsall would score in the match, but maybe I missed an incident or two.

Go on Wednesday, good to get the season underway!

Up until the 60th minute we were just awful. But credit where it's due, we came through it, Penny was a revelation when he came on and Izzy looks a player.

Monks haircut though FFS.

The approach play was decent enough plenty of position, but it all falls down in attack when you don't have any quality forwards.

So what can the club do to remedy the situation?
