Barca can't afford to let him go and nobody can afford to buy him.

I think he'll end up staying too

The Barca president has agreed to resign if it means Messi staying

Messi will sign a new contract and see out his career at Barca and as they say the rest will be history

That's the way I see the situation panning out

Bit of a dickwod is old Messi ain't he?

We don’t really know who is pulling the strings here. All the agents and advisors will have their own respective interests.

Messi is one of the wealthiest and arguably greatest player of all time. If that doesn’t fizz up your ego and make you a bit of a ******** then he’s even more special than we thought.

In what respect?

Wanting to play for a competitive team? This isn't a new issue, it has been rumbling for 2 or 3 years and the Bayern game was the straw that broke the camels back.

Point taken.

The issue I see in all this is how so many people are able to hold someone's life in their hands.

Its like he's owned.....

Money aside its not a million miles away from modern day slavery.

There was that whole thing about him and his father nearly going to prison for years after defrauding the government out of about 4 million Euros though, which probably tells us a little bit about his character...

Once upon a time if you were one of the best you had a choice of clubs you could sign for.

Messi, arguably the best has just Two options.

Man City

PSG.

No one else can afford him.

Breaking news over here in Argentina...

Messi staying at Barca until the end of his contract

Shock horror. Happy that the club has actually won though for a change tbh.

Agree

Messi's change of heart was apparently down to not wanting to go to court after everything the club has done for him since he's been there

Looks like you called it right, although not in terms of it being a means to get a new contract. If he wanted a new contract he wouldn't have had to do this to get one.

Don't think this has worked out particularly well for either side as things stand.

Messi will spend another season with a team that has very little chance of being European Champions unless they get very busy in the next 3 weeks, they need about half a dozen top players.

Barcelona will lose one of the best players of all time for free next summer at a time when they are in a financial hole. They could have reached a compromise, got a decent fee and spent his wages on starting a rebuild that they will need to do anyway in a years time.

The big question is what is Messi's real worth to Barca.  Shirts, tourists, global image rights etc, TV deals and all that good stuff.  Any transfer fee and saving on wages could be minimal in comparison.  Realistically he's got 3-4 good years left in him.  Barca need to hang on to him for that time or his image will no longer be associated with them which will have significant economic effects on them.  If he ends his career there they will be able to cash in on him forever, if he leaves they will lose that opportunity.  This is all about business now, not football.

It is, but I doubt he will sign a new contract unless they make significant changes to the structure and to the team.

As he says in his interview, the club have not had a proper plan for a few years and have been reacting to paper over the cracks rather than being proactive in stopping any cracks appearing. They are short of a Champions League challenge unless they make big changes and as things stand they can't afford to do so. He wants a proper crack at Champions League titles while he still has it in him to be the best but he can't do it on his own.

He blames the president for the current position of the club. The president did say he might resign but unless that happens soon it won't make much difference in relation to the team this season. They have presidential elections next year but by then it might be too late as Messi will be free to negotiate with other clubs in the last 6 months of his contract.

The shirts, image rights etc, - all good money and business for the club but his wages are said to be over £100M per year and he will now apparently get a £63M bonus as part of his current contract just for staying. That on top of perhaps negotiating a compromise fee which is now lost is a lot to pay.

Next year he will be available for free as things stand and other big clubs will be looking at the boost his image could give to their image rights, shirt sales etc and may be able to offer bigger wages and more chance of success.
