Yes, that's the point of a squad. Are you seriously suggesting we'll only need 4 senior centre backs for a formation that requires 3 of them to be on the pitch? We need at least 5 if playing a back 3 According to Chansiri's interview in The Athletic a few weeks ago (I think I've got the right one), the club works on the principle of having at least 2 options in every position. That makes perfect sense to me as long as you also have a few emergency options (probably from the Academy, especially if the recently proposed squad limits are implemented).
