The meltdown on here if Dawson or Wildsmith had conceded that goal Fulham have just scored

Indeed, we still have posted something we bottled the final! No credit to hull, the team that finished above us or beat us twice in that season I believe

Keepers get criticised for their position all the time, it's comes with the territory, but the keeper has to take a calculated risk as to where they position themselves as to where they think the ball will end up.  If they choose safety all the time, then they'll be labelled as afraid to come off their line or come for crosses, in fact by choosing safety they could well be opening up their own defence by leaving too much space for the attacker.  The 18 yard box is the keepers territory, all of it, it's a big area in the most critical part of the pitch.

Take Fulham's goal at the near post against Wildsmith.  "Never get beaten at the near post" etc always comes out, but that's because Wildsmith was more central to the goal.  Go back just a few days to Hillsborough where Harris against Huddersfield went for the far corner, the Huddersfield keeper was positioned more centrally and produced a brilliant fingertip save.   Had he been protecting his near post like Wildsmith was criticised for not doing, Harris would have scored.   It's all calculated risk and you can't always get it right.

The Brentford keeper had every right to expect a cross.  I think anyone watching it if they are being honest, and maybe every Brentford player too was exactly thinking the same thing.   it was very well done by Fulham to convince Brentford that a cross was coming, and the power on it was superb.

There’s always one.

Wish they’d stop blowing smoke up Parkers hole. That team must have cost 100m to assemble. They should be near the top of the league

They spent 35 million this season but sold players for 25 million. They spent a 100 mill in the season before that whilst in the premier league, they could afford it. Season before that spent 18 mill, sold 17 mill of players.

They have done nothing other clubs wouldnt do. Im not saying us as we dont sell players.

The wider the angle is from the perspective of the forward, the less such a tenet can apply. The keeper has to position himself basically in the middle of the area available to the attacker with a slight edge towards the nearest as he'll have a fraction less time to react in that area. But time and again those who rely on accepted wisdoms will turn it out as if it's some kind of immutable scientific law.

It doesn't really apply to this particular goal though. Not only did the Brentford keeper outsmart himself, but he evidently does it often enough for opponents to have noticed it in preparation for the game.

Quite possibly, but then would be slightly further away from the ball if it becomes a cross in to the box, which I think everyone was expecting.  The Fulham/Brentford line was at around the 20 yard line.  That's a huge empty space that he's expected to cover.

Yes that's quite possible.  Can't say I know much about him, or Brentford for that matter, but either way Fulham had prepared well one way or another.
