The Wednesday sounds great...hopefully the commentators wouldn't be able to call us Sheffield

I saw results on tv the other day, I think it was South Today, where they used just Sheffield for the pigs

Back in the 70's we were more Metrosexual than the Millennial Wednesday fannys could imagine ...

I love this mix and match approach to what's traditional.

1. A name used up to the 1920s

2. A badge first used in the 1970s

I read somewhere that we changed our name to Sheffield Wednesday in 1928 or 29 but it appears we were referred to as SW as far back as the 1890's.

'Sheffield Wednesday' was even painted on the roof of the main stand at the Olive Grove ground as can be seen in the bottom photo from a 'derby' match in the 1890's. Sheffield We and part of the D can be made out.

Seen this on the club's site. A certificate of 1929 showing the change of company name from the then equivalent of the government's companies house.

Although as shown by the photos in my previous post, we were known as Sheffield Wednesday for a long time before then and even had it painted on the roof of the stand at the Olive Grove ground.

I think the league have to approve any name change - recently Wimbledon changed to MK Don's, but Hull City weren't allowed to change to Hull Tigers.

If asked, I think I'd vote for changing - not having a geographical name in their name doesn't seem to have done Arsenal any harm

You say that but does anybody on here know what city they are from?
