jonnyowl
Or roughly £13,800 per player per week for a squad of 25. This is being discussed by clubs this coming week. I support a salary cap but then FFP needs to be changed! What will happen to clubs relegated from premiership? Will they have an advantage? For those promoted, there going to have to dramatically increase their wage bill to compete.
NeonLeon
Considering it’ll dilute the PL if they enforce it straight away, I’d imagine they’ll give relegated clubs 3 seasons to comply. It’d be easy to say that’s a negative because it’s a step that moves towards the PL becoming a closed shop for say 23-25 teams. But at the moment history suggests PL teams struggle to bounce back first time, regardless of how much they spend. . Mr. Chow
I’m all for a salary cap but how can that be fair for teams playing against relegated premier league teams fighting for promotion.
Popular Post S36 OWL
Just now, Mr. Chow said: I’m all for a salary cap but how can that be fair for teams playing against relegated premier league teams fighting for promotion. Simple. Every player who signs for a Premier league club has a clause inserted in their contract saying upon relegation their wage will drop to £13.800 in line with the EFL wage cap. This would mean failure payments could be scrapped immediately. 35 2

matthefish2002
Problem is clubs will employ best accountants and lawyers in the country to find loop holes and ways round any legislation like they did with FFP. Parachute payments create an unfair advantage to some clubs but so does clubs with a rich financial backer.
@owlstalk
You can absolutely guarantee that clubs would pay their players £13,800 a week and then give them a part time job in the Megastore for £134163524y426 an hour 3 5 Owlstalk Shop
WAWAWUTO17
Salary cap im afraid doesn't work. They get round it with sponsors. Exactly what happens in Rugby
CalmJimmers
A straight salary cap would not work, so many ways to get out of it, players unions won't support it, if they did they would go elsewhere worldwide. Have a maximum overall club spend, one where whatever the club spends their money on they cannot go above a certain amount. As soon as they do they get a points deduction and/or transfer embargo. Basically similar to what American sports have. Let's players still negotiate freely, but would drive wages down overall and gets rid of loopholes like paying a family member a stupid amount.
sonofbert2
Sponsorship and bonuses will be the way around it.

stocksyuto
Will the salary cap include all the extras or will it be 13.8k base wage plus 5 different clauses adding to that
Bluesteel
The devil will be in the detail otherwise players can be paid huge bonuses or signing on fees to get around it. Those figures sound around what weds would be looking to get a wage bill at anyway, maybe slightly less. I guess the question is how many clubs already pay or exceed 18m in wages and who does this give an advantage to if anyone? The smaller clubs like Wycombe wouldn’t get anywhere near that anyway, the big hitters would dwarf it. The ones in the middle would probably prosper the most. Well £13,800 is the average. If he's on £50k a week alot of others in the squad will be on a lot less. Could cause problems!

FFP does it over 3 seasons, where you can still make huge losses, wrangle over punishments, try and get round with stadium sales, ticket prices and merchandise rising to avoid losses. Having a maximum spend would be similar, but have crucial differences. You don't spend unlimited amounts first 2 seasons to try and get to the Prem, parachute payments don't skew competition, can't spend more than you can afford without breaks being applied immediately, overspend is immediately punished, still free to negotiate with players without limits.
Hitcat
Might also mean clubs bringing through youngsters more often, rather than relying on expensive loan signings...

If the cap is £18mill and Rooney’s wages are £5mill, they’ve got £13mill left to spend on the rest of the squad. People shouldn’t get too hung up on the £13,800 mentioned in the OP. As said that’s just £18mill divides equally between a 25 man squad. Realistically you can spend your £18mill how you want. Could have a squad of 18 on a million each if you really wanted too. It doesn’t stop having big signings, but big signings would leave less to pay for the rest.
