Salary Cap £18 million

Recommended Posts

Or roughly £13,800 per player per week for a squad of 25.

This is being discussed by clubs this coming week.

I support a salary cap but then FFP needs to be changed!

What will happen to clubs relegated from premiership? Will they have an advantage?

For those promoted, there going to have to dramatically increase their wage bill to compete.

Considering it’ll dilute the PL if they enforce it straight away, I’d imagine they’ll give relegated clubs 3 seasons to comply.

It’d be easy to say that’s a negative because it’s a step that moves towards the PL becoming a closed shop for say 23-25 teams. But at the moment history suggests PL teams struggle to bounce back first time, regardless of how much they spend.

Question is what happens in situations like derby and Rooney?

If his contract includes a playing role, he must be set at 13,800 like every other player.

A straight salary cap would not work, so many ways to get out of it, players unions won't support it, if they did they would go elsewhere worldwide.

Have a maximum overall club spend, one where whatever the club spends their money on they cannot go above a certain amount. As soon as they do they get a points deduction and/or transfer embargo. Basically similar to what American sports have.

Let's players still negotiate freely, but would drive wages down overall and gets rid of loopholes like paying a family member a stupid amount.

Doesn't matter, it's Wayne Rooney's Derby according to Sky.

Isn't that what FFP/P&S is supposed to do?

The devil will be in the detail otherwise players can be paid huge bonuses or signing on fees to get around it.

Those figures sound around what weds would be looking to get a wage bill at anyway, maybe slightly less.

I guess the question is how many clubs already pay or exceed 18m in wages and who does this give an advantage to if anyone? The smaller clubs like Wycombe wouldn’t get anywhere near that anyway, the big hitters would dwarf it. The ones in the middle would probably prosper the most.

Well £13,800 is the average.

If he's on £50k a week alot of others in the squad will be on a lot less.

Could cause problems!

FFP does it over 3 seasons, where you can still make huge losses, wrangle over punishments, try and get round with stadium sales, ticket prices and merchandise rising to avoid losses.

Having a maximum spend would be similar, but have crucial differences. You don't spend unlimited amounts first 2 seasons to try and get to the Prem, parachute payments don't skew competition, can't spend more than you can afford without breaks being applied immediately, overspend is immediately punished, still free to negotiate with players without limits.

Simple.

If the cap is £18mill and Rooney’s wages are £5mill, they’ve got £13mill left to spend on the rest of the squad.

People shouldn’t get too hung up on the £13,800 mentioned in the OP. As said that’s just £18mill divides equally between a 25 man squad.

Realistically you can spend your £18mill how you want. Could have a squad of 18 on a million each if you really wanted too. It doesn’t stop having big signings, but big signings would leave less to pay for the rest.
