Bruce's decision to walk out on the club and take over the reins at boyhood club Newcastle United still gets the goat of a large portion of Wednesdayites - and rightly so. chairman Dejphon Chansiri gave Bruce a whole month off before taking up the post. Such a move was unprecedented, especially when the season was in full swing. Many, from the outside looking in, were bemused at the decision to grant such a long portion of time to an incoming manager but nevertheless Bruce quickly saw the club's results improve. There was even an outside chance of the play-offs which ultimately ran out of steam, but the signs were that Bruce had begun to turn the tide at Wednesday. For him to then abandon the Owls on the eve of this season was a big punch to the gut. It left Wednesday in limbo, and the appointment of Garry Monk wasn't confirmed until September - when the transfer window had already shut. To this regard Monk was unfortunate in the sense that he had to work with the players Bruce had left. Monk has still has not made a permanent signing for Wednesday, by the way. To be fair to Bruce, it's worth noting that he did sign the likes of Dominic Iorfa and Kadeem Harris - two players who have proven to be astute signings. He also sanctioned t But the squad was in big need of a revamp last summer. The likes of Fernando Forestieri and Sam Hutchinson had gone stale and their recent departures were a sad way to end their Hillsborough careers. This is the kind of work that Monk is now having to do, against the backdrop of the EFL case and a fanbase that is screaming out for some consistency. He needs to address what Bruce, and indeed managers before him, did not. The squad is still in need of a shake-up. Even more so perhaps. Monk has continuously stressed that he wants to bring the average age down and has made early attempts at that. The conveyor belt of talent at S6 has suddenly been turned back on with Alex Hunt and Liam Shaw just two of those who have been churned out. Time will tell if they are good enough to warrant regular first-team slots. But there is little doubt that Monk has plans for a revolution, not evolution. He will want to show that he can replicate Bruce's canny moves in the transfer market this summer. As for his predecessor, many will perhaps be surprised at just how well he has done since taking over Newcastle. They have been safe from relegation for some time, and are believed to be on the verge of a takeover. Many will look back on Bruce's brief tenure at S6 as a missed opportunity, but his decision to leave was exactly that - his decision. And the man himself perhaps summed it up best when he said: "It is the challenge of managing Newcastle United. That was the overriding factor for me to be as selfish as I was.” Bruce's reign was short-lived but the fillip it provided was what the club needed at that moment in time. Manwë Posted July 16, 2020 Share Posted July 16, 2020 It might have been a dream come true for him to have Newcastle come along and I can understand that, but he behaved dishonourably towards a Wednesday that had given him the space he wanted and needed following deaths in the family and some cricket. He left so soon into his time here, on the eve of the season starter too. He was duty bound to give it a go with Wednesday, but instead ran off at the first chance his ex school sweetheart fluttered her eyelashes. Westfield Owl Posted July 16, 2020 Share Posted July 16, 2020 Bit pathetic that any genuine Wednesday fan would still hold a grudge against Bruce for moving to a better job, managing his hometown club. We made some great signings under Bruce - Luongo, Iorfa, Borner; all bargains. He sorted out our pre-season, binned off the wage-thieves (Abdi, Jones, Boyd, Matias), our results in the second half of last season were a big improvement compared with the relegation-battle under Luhukay. And most importantly, Bruce brought the club together after a period of utter turmoil. Yes it was sh*t that he moved on so quickly. That’s because he’s a very decent manager, who was in demand.
