Lawrence Fowler hanged for murder 04.09.1925

Recommended Posts

just something a bit different, I've been reading about the Sheffield gang wars in the 1920's

In the book by J.P. Bean there is a copy of a letter written by Lawrence Fowler two days before he was hanged, one of two brothers executed for the murder of William Plommer during the Sheffield gang wars in 1925

Just a little aside, see the last line bottom left, he has clearly written "Play up Wednesday" at the end of the letter, he couldn't have been all that bad

Charlie Peace was stirring things up  in the gang wars in the 1880s and was eventually hanged  for killing a policeman. His gang was also around Darnall .There was reference to footy in a play about him  at the Crucible theatre and I'd assume it it must have been Wednesday as piggies had not been born . Think it was ' Life and times of Charlie Peace.'.

Guest The Claw

Read the book really good insight to how Sheffield was back in the day, moonies from west bar, park brigade park hill, celler grate gang from walkley. throwing rings on sky edge, peaky blinders and gangs of London ffs 😂
