Championship club Wigan enter administration - automatic 12 point deduction

Recommended Posts

So if Wigan finish in the relegation zone anyway, which is unlikely, then they start next season in league 1 on minus 12 pts

If deducting the 12 pts this season  pushes them into the relegation zone then they do it this season.

If they finish 12 pts above the relegation zone they deduct them this season and they stay in Championship

Is this correct?

Are they going to pay players so they can fulfill their fixtures?

Just wonder if this is Wigan thinking they can still stop up with a points deduction and it’s a tactically timed administration.

If they stay up the points deduction will be applied next season. Obviously a loophole closed by the efl.

If the lack of hate receipts is a big contributing factor then I would be really peed off .

This is about servicing debts .EFL need to take a step back

You get a receipt for hate, some folk on here will have a house full of paper 😜

They're actually in really good form, won something like 6 out of 7 games. Maybe their thought is to take the hit now and hope their form still enables them to stay up, rather than prolonging it and then starting next season on -12.

Yep, more chance of clawing 4 back this season when they're in decent form and can keep hold of their better players than 12 next after a fire sale.

Could well be part of the thinking.

How much responsibility should the previous owner have for selling it onto these people?

It’s a tough one with this because it appears it’s a member of the consortium, that bought them 2 years ago, that has bought out the other members last month.

So get relegated and a double whammy by starting next season on  - 12, but stay up and you get away with it.

EFL not fit for purpose, feel for the Wigan fans as pointed out this smells fishy with a recent takeover.

Makes sense to me. If you are going down anyway then you would just go into liquidation then and instead of going down by 6 points you go down by 18. But unfair if you are relegated by 1 point though.

I have to say what a complete an utter farce the EFL are, they would rather companies go bust than do something about the unsustainable league.

In other news just on sky the Premier league chairman reported before a parliamentary committee yesterday that no talks have taken place ever between the EFL and the Premier league about financial support for the football league teams struggling with CoVid.

Is it me or has this come completely out of the blue? I haven't seen lots of articles about their plight etc. Plenty on us, derby and Birmingham and EFL but nothing on Wigan.

Terrible for Wigan fans, clubs going into administration when there is so much money in football is terrible. Need more fan ownership and wage caps in football to stop clubs disappearing.

Reminds me of the medieval witch trials from Monty Python.
'We will set you on fire. If you survive then you're a witch and we'll kill you a different way.
If you burn to death, then you were right and you were not a witch.'

Which itself is based on 18th century witch trials around Salem, Massachusetts except they used drowning - weighed them down and if you survived you were a witch and if you drowned....er...whoops. Fact really can be stranger than fiction.

That's not what they said.

If Wigan finish outside of the relegation place the -12 will be applied this season likely relegating them. If they end up in the bottom 3 then the -12 points is next season.

Basically they are probably going to be relegated unless they finish 12 points above the bottom 3, they are currently 8 points outside the bottom three and have won their last 3 games. I hope they keep winning and get the points they need Huddersfield, QPR, Boro, Hull are in free fall so they have every chance of staying up.

Given the previous owner presumably gave various warranties in the sale contract they may very well be quite nervous at the minute.

Also as regards the sale only being made a month ago, it's possible the sale was made in say February, and the next few months were simply spent satisfying conditions precedent (or subsequent as drafted) one of which would no doubt have been satisfaction of the EFL's fit and proper person test. Rather ironic if the EFL delayed completing the test until May/June. All speculation but could get rather messy this.

Aye mate, yet as always. no one ever seems to hold the EFL accountable.

That's because they are above reproach guardians of the game, happy for clubs to waste hundreds of thousands in legal fees so they can pat each other on the back. People complain about the PL but it looks after it's member's and is professional.

EFL makes FIFA look competent.
