Why haven't Sheffield Wednesday announced new contracts for Fletcher, Fox etc?

The situation is really complex and we could end up losing some of these players.

The club is in trouble with the EFL and doesn't know the outcome, meaning we simply don't know if we are going to be a Championship club next season or not. That is massive in terms of what the players are looking for both in terms of what league they play in and obviously the wages they'd get as a result.

Remember players have short careers and have to try and earn as much money as they possibly can in such a short space of time, and have families just like you and I, and so have to do what is best for themselves.  No matter how much they enjoy playing for a certain club or manager, the brutal facts are they need to earn as much as they can and find the best contracts available to do so.

 

The players will be unlikely to want to stay if we were to be relegated as a result of the EFL hearing in a few weeks.

Similarly the club themselves won't know, and won't be too keen on handing out big contracts to the likes of Fletcher, Fox etc if in a few weeks we end up being relegated through points deductions.

Whilst this is a totally sensible move from Sheffield Wednesday's part, the truth is that it leads to a bit of a standoff.

In the meantime the players agents will be doing their utmost to look elsewhere if necessary to try and find a solution at another club who can afford to commit.

 

The latest rules put in place by the EFL are as follows:

 

• Clubs can't approach players whose contracts expire until June 24th (but let's be honest they'll have already ignored that one)
• Clubs have until June 23rd to offer players new contracts or release them
• Players can sign short term extensions with their clubs to run until the end of the season whenever that is

Just to throw a curveball into the mix - maybe the club has already given these players new contracts but think it's not the best time to be announcing it (sensitive time with so many on reduced pay/losing their jobs due to Covid etc) 



As fans we can only sit, wait, and hope.

Because Fletcher for one will have both eyes fixed on which division we will be playing in next season as will 90% of our squad.

There won't be many takers for league 1 football.

The fact we find ourselves in this position is purely down to poor leadership.

Dont blame the club not finalising contracts with any players.

Everything is really up in the air currently and can well understand club not wanting to rush into anything after having they fingers burnt a few times before.

For me it’s Best to take the ‘assume you’ve got the virus’ approach, assume we will be in league 1 and plan accordingly.

Fletcher has had the best 18 months of his career and looks to be in the form of his career. The problem we have is our club is run like a boat with a hole in one end constantly taking on water and sicking further and further into trouble. The latest of which is a potential points deduction or worse relegation.

 

If you are a 33 year old. playing good football would you not want to be a free agent in the summer when most likely a bottom end Premiership team could well come in for you, to give you one last shot at the big time not to mention with the money they have they can easily match or better his current deal.

 

Say what you want but is anyone surprised, our club is run so badly it is frightening, we stubble from season to season with no plan other than promotion will sort everything. We don't off load players we don't need they sit in the stands on tens of thousands a week no playing, we don't accept good offers when they come and ask for loan fees or silly transfer fees. Then at the end of every season we release 8-10 players for nothing.

 

Should we get relegated or (be relegated by the EFL) we could well start next season with the team we finish this season with, minus all the youth players who also have not been tied down to new deals either, no announcement of Hunt, Shaw, Borukov. Would these deals really be that massive the club could not get these sorted now. But that is just not the Wednesday way under DC.

It's more than a distinct possibility and it worries me stupid.

I've always said whilst Chansiri is our owner it isn't going to end well, he needs to swallow some pride and sell up for the good of the club.

The current crop weren't up for it in the championship, despite being 3rd, our will to win simply collapsed. Id hate to have too many of them in L 1 as every game is a battle home and away and right now we ain't got the players for that. If they think that they can stroll around in L1 and win comfortably then they're sadly mistaken. Players willing to fight for it and have a point to prove will win out.

If that means losing some of the players we would prefer to keep then unfortunatily, so be it - it would be more seriously bad management to sign players on high wages not knowing what division we will be playing in next season.

Couldn't agree more.

 

Whilst I agree the club should fight the EFL to avoid a points deduction the uncertainty hampers our preparation for next season.

Club right to hold fire. So are the players. It's a wait and see for most. I think the only ones we might see pen new deals are young'uns like Urhoghide. The rest will have to wait until we know which division we'll be in.

Whilst I’d like to think we could keep hold of Fletcher, the fact is he’s not a kid on low wages.

 

Generally in football ability is directly connected to wages.

 

Any offer to Fletcher will be the same as or better than he is currently on. I’d like to think that if he leaves we would be able to bring a replacement in of a similar if not better standard, given the wages we’d have to offer (I.e Fletchers wages)

As good as Fletcher has been, do you really think a bottom end Premier league club is going to come in for him?

Fletcher imo won’t be short of offers at teams better placed in this league and possibly lower Prem, he is probably just waiting to see what league we will be in and what offers from other teams he has. Personally don’t think Fox will get a better offer elsewhere.

Both Fletch and Fox will be able to pick up better wages elsewhere as free agents.

Indeed he will be a free agent and if he can get 5-10 goals in a season its a no brainer punt - its not like he is costing them anymore than a few million max to make them £100m.

I think he’d be great for a West Brom, Leeds, Burnley etc...Similar to the older Glenn Murray at Brighton.

 

Fletcher is pure class. A level above our lads.

 

I also think the lack of midweek games will suit him perfectly. We have been over-reliant on him so have started him Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday until he breaks. A Prem club won’t need to use him so intensively.
