Championship Players to refuse and NOT play when football resumes

Recommended Posts

I suspect Lyle Taylor has had a contract offer from another club so don’t blame him for not playing. The only thing I’d say is no one knows when next season will start so the next payday for him and other players could be months away. As for our players out of contract the only one I’m interested in keeping is Fletch and I’m not even sure if he’s fit !

To be fair

1) That's no different from anyone else in the country really

2) They have their own lives/finances to think about - they have to earn as much money as they possibly can in the short burst of life as a pro footballer

Can't think of too many professions where people will still pick up a wage whilst refusing to work.

The short career argument doesn't really apply at the top end and for majority of Champ players. If they're sensible they earn more than enough to live off,  different for L1 & 2 players.

Let me flip it round and ask you this

"Do you think players who have been told they aren't getting a new contract in Feb/March put in as much effort or as hard a tackle after being told that?"

If they've owt about them maybe they'd think if i want to get another club I'd better show people what I can do not sit on my arse. Clearly if your current club don't want to keep you there's unlikely to be another club offering you a similar or better contract.

Looking at the vids Forestieri has done of Hillsborough for the fans he will be playing.

All it takes is a canny agent to get involved. A lot can happen till the proposed season start.

Those players can point to at least a couple of years of committed performances. Do you honestly think they or their new clubs will give even the slightest throw about their commitment over their last couple of months at Wednesday after they’ve already been told they’re not wanted?!

Thing is in cases like Taylor Charlton would have loved to give him a new cotract but his eyes are set on a big move so wouldn't sign.

True, I suppose in this era that is the price the club pay for hanging onto a player and letting his contract run down at a time in his career when he has a sell on value.

Depends what it says in your contract

Be a pretty badly drawn up contract that allows the employee to think xxxx that, I'm not working anymore but where's my wages.

If you agree to sign say a 3-year contract with a club for your employment it shouldn't be OK for you to t*ss the last couple of months off just because you have previously done what you are paid to do.

Why, aren't they allowed to work after they retire from football or summat?

Footballers go on about a short career, but in reality, they can do any kind of job after they have retired from playing football. They could become a Doctor, a Publican, a Council Worker, a Coach, Physio, Manager.....they retire from playing football in their 30s, not from work in general.

They've almost as much time left to work before retirement than most of them have lived.

But what I'm saying is there's probably a good reason why their current club aren't extending,  probably because they haven't been performing that well. So they need to put themselves in the shop window. Always a long list of players without a club come the start of a season.

If two thirds of the team are playing like they don't care it's hard for the others to come out of a game looking any better

Fair point, I wouldn't say out of contract players like Lee, Pelupessy, Hutchinson, Murphy, Forestieri have been playing purposely like they don't care this year though, more a case of being either woefully out of form, not good enough and badly organised by the manager.

Charlton's top scorer Lyle Taylor will not play when the season resumes because he does not want to risk getting injured, boss Lee Bowyer says.

Taylor, 30, is out of contract at the end of June and Bowyer said the ex-AFC Wimbledon striker did not want to scupper a "life-changing move".

The EFL has said second-tier games are set to resume on 20 June, subject to safety requirements being met.

Charlton are two points adrift of safety with nine matches to play.

"We have 15 out of contract - we've got six loans and nine of our own contracted players out," Bowyer told Talksport.

"They finish at the end of June and, unfortunately for us, three players have said that they're not going to play.

"Lyle's one of them and that's tough for us, that's tough for me as the manager.

"Lyle's a big player for us - a bit like [Troy] Deeney at Watford. You know, similar situation - when he plays, we win games.

"Lyle has said that he's not going to play because of risk of injury.

"Chris Solly the same, he said the same. Then we've got David Davis, who is on loan from Birmingham, and he says he doesn't want to come back and play games."

Bowyer said that Taylor had told him he wants to play but that worrying about an injury affecting a move would mean he would not be the same player.

Taylor joined the Addicks on a free transfer from AFC Wimbledon in July 2018 and scored 32 goals in 63 league appearances.

"He is going to get a life-changing move," added Bowyer.

"I was saying this a few months ago when this first happened, when we were talking about the contract problem. I thought this could be a problem because I know how well Lyle has done for us.

"If it wasn't for Lyle, we wouldn't even be in this division. He was outstanding last season, he had a great start this season.

"He's chose now not to come back and play to the end, so we have to move on because I've got a lot of players that are hungry."
