Homegrown 11 since big jack

Give over.....Mark Smith was close to England standard and named by Liam Brady as his most difficult opponent.

Peter Shirtcliff would get on most Prem teams of today

Mel Sterland was an international and won honours at Rangers

Carl Shutt won the league with Leeds

Who’d be scoring the goals in this side then? Junior Agogo and John Pearson?

Sterland Shirtliffe Smith and loads of the others all played in the early 80's when Jack Charlton was here. Shutt would have been in reserves/youth team.

'Since Big Jack' surely means players debuting or signing August 1983 onwards?

I wouldn't normally compare but in this instance I think it's fair.....

United's Home Grown XI

             Aaron Ramsdale

Matt Lowton    Kyle Walker Harry Maguire Phil Jagielka      Kyle Naughton

             Jacob Mellis   Michael Tonge

                        David Brooks

        Dominic Calvert Lewin    Billy Sharp

They've got more Kyle's than decent centre midfielders but apart from that......

All still playing except Tonge. Several worth over £10m

It puts our Academy in the past in a very bad light.

This thread just highlights the sad state of our academy!

We did not have an academy at the time of most of those players development, but I agree with the sentiment.

Wednesday have only ever paid lip service to youth development in the 50+  years I have been watching them, while local clubs such as Barnsley and Dem Blunts have invested heavily in the last 25 years.

We have constantly wasted money on purchasing players at the top or on their way down trying to either by success or avoid failure.

Man Utd have probably got over half a dozen teams that would beat ours.

Any one remember Peter Shirtliffe’s brother Paul playing for us, and did Peter play for us twice.

I remember him, yes he did play for us twice, he had a spell at Charlton and did very well, he was a big part in their side that beat Leeds in play offs.

I think we had a couple of other brothers that came through academy, can't remember names, I think one played in League cup quarter final when we beat Wimbledon at Selhurst.

Edit Linighan? Related to one that broke our hearts in cup final.

Name Strutt rings a bell.

Carl and Darren Bradshaw both started with Wednesday.

I am not sure but I think the Linighan bros came from Ipswich as 18 yr olds.

Ryan Jones deserves better than he is getting here. the guys short career at Wednesday before his injury was phenomenal. Look at his stats from 93 94 - This is incredible stuff for a young Sheffielder in the top league in his first season...

Ignore QPR that was season before

27 matches

14 wins

11 draws

2 defeats

6 goals from midfield

I always think he is unfairly overlooked

Great player, career cut short due to injury!
