Let's talk about Jordan Rhodes...

"...the manager"?

He's had four of them in his time here (Bruce doesn't count as Rhodes was on loan) and none of them wanted to play him much apart from those first 20 games, when presumably there were about eight million reasons influencing the decision.

It won't be long before Monk starts earnestly getting blamed for coronavirus.

So the manager who doesn't count is the one good manager out of the four?

So what you're saying is that Bruce did a great job managing someone who he quite possibly never even met in his time at the club (bearing in mind that Rhodes was on loan during that time)? This is typical of the Rhodes effect. When he does well (count them on the fingers of one of The Simpsons' hands) it's because he's great, but when he doesn't (ever so slightly more often), absolutely anything can be cited as being to blame instead.

In my experience, some semblance of sense, reason and fact is helpful when it comes to formulating a cogent argument.

Any year we have been good we have played to strikers strength be it chapman/varadi hirst/williams curran/mcullough hooper/fletcher/forestieri

Hooper, Fletcher, Forestieri, Joao, Nuhiu, Winnall, Matias.

All of them have varying abilities, physiques and styles of play. Each of them were here under several managers, with different team selections and styles of play. They were all used in endless combinations. Yet somehow Rhodes consistently had the worst scoring rate out of all of them.

We're a club absolutely desperate for money, have a once prolific striker on our payroll that we don't play and yet there has been almost no interest in taking him off our hands apparently. Norwich know better than anyone what he's capable of yet they evidently refused to pay any kind of fee whatsoever despite their reported interest.

At this point, I'm going to call on the principle of Occam's Razor.

Before big ron nobody much were singing the praises of hirst Worthington pressman pearson. All were around under eustace but blossomed under a good/experienced manager

Am I comparing Monk to Atkinson?

2020 to 1990?

A goalkeeper to a striker?

Players like Dave Bennett, Andy Booth, Jim Magilton and Ritchie Humphreys were managed by Big Ron and failed to live up to previous standards. So what?

You appear to want to find holes my point of view........ Yours is just as good. I think i put a fair view forward

Except he's failed under all 4 of the managers he's had here.

Endless tactics and teammates have come and gone with no significant change in his performances.

And almost no interest in taking him away from us even though everyone knows we want to get rid of him and we're haemorrhaging money.

Wednesday fans were desperate for him to succeed but inexorably they've virtually all lost faith.

No special explanation to be found. It's perfectly straightforward.

Think it's as simple as the modern game is now passing Rhodes by.

No team really wants to play with two upfront anymore letalone a old fashion system that would get the best out of Rhodes.

Great players can change the way they play. But that's the problem Rhodes is not and never has been a great player he has always been a great goalscorer though. But the days of penalty box strikers in the top divisions are gone to a degree.

However dont be surprised to see him score 20 goals in league one next season for a team. Where they old fashion get it in the box style still exists with some sides.

Space aliens have been challenged to a game of football by the Loony Tunes, so one of the aliens stole all of Rhodes' abilities so that they could win the match?

The aliens won and the Loony Tunes are now an attraction in an outer space theme park. Unfortunately this means Rhodes will never regain his abilities.

Needs a good, consistent strike partner.  Very briefly had one with Fletcher and we started to see the rewards but fletchers injury soon put an end to that.

We refuse to do what's needed to get the best out of him. We need to let him go.

You mean like coming here, full of confidence as our record signing and going into a team doing well at the top of the division? Funnily enough Rhodes played in all of the first 20 games after his arrival, starting 16 of them. The reward for this show of faith? Three goals. That's THREE GOALS. In nearly half a season's worth of games. His ineffectiveness led to him sitting on the bench and in the stands so often, not the other way around.

After this, Carvalhal, Luhukay, Bullen and Monk all declined to play him regularly, even when some were on loan (Joao, Winnall) or in possibly our worst injury crisis ever (Hooper, Forestieri, Matias, Winnall and Fletcher all out for lengthy periods). During his time at the club he has shared appearances with seven other forwards of various styles and abilities, and until this season, EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM has scored at a better rate than he has (he might just have staggered past Winnall's average this season). And remember, this was supposed to be his USP. Even his biggest supporters acknowledged there was little else to his game. So take away the goals and what's left? Even Atdhe Nuhiu, the oft-proclaimed 'donkey', 'joke' and 'pub player' scored in just 4 months what Rhodes has managed in his entire three plus years tenure at the club.

What do you actually see when you watch him that gives you hope? Toughness holding the ball up to build attacks, a physical presence harrassing defenders, blistering pace to get behind the opponent and stretch the field, quick footed dribbling as he leaves adversaries in his wake, intelligent use of ball and space to create opportunities for others, accurate shooting from all around the penalty area, inspirational determination and leadership? What?

Never in all my years of watching this club has one player been awarded so much patience, had so many excuses made for them. And still some are living in 2015; the last time he actually merited the epithet 'prolific' due to what he was doing on the field, rather than just in fanboy's imaginations.

Nobody would pay for him.

Works brilliantly with Fletcher.

Doesn't work with our strikers who are out of contract.

Fletcher and Rhodes still under contract for a year.

Seems a pretty obvious solution to me.
