FORTY Years ago today - Promotion

Poor match but a fantastic end to a wonderful season - kickstarted by THAT match on 26th Deccember 1979.

 

One of the very best of days ! Who wasn't on the pitch ? !!

I was on the leppings lane end and, with the help of two mates, climbed the fence and got onto the pitch. I turned round to thank them only to see a police officer opening the gates for everyone to run on as well.

I was in the leppings lane seats for my first ever match as an eight year old. We couldn’t get in the north or south stands as they were full.

They reckon there was only 33k or so there that day

32734, 13000 more than the previous home game. Great times even though the game was poor but so much tension. The great TC ending up with 24 goals.

Sort of. Chesterfield could still, theoretically, have overtaken us after the Exeter game; with two games left they were four points behind us. But they had a 14 goal difference to make up...which clearly they weren't going to do. So whilst bar the shouting the Exeter game was the one promotion wasn't a fact until after the Carlisle game.

That was my first game. Bobbed myself when they crowd invaded the pitch and they tried to get in the directors box.
