A rather simplistic and childish appraisal, especially given what unfolded just a few months after the man consistently placed as one of the top 50-60 players in Premier League history left the club. Are you suggesting we are still not paying the price for the legacy of some of those decisions at that period in our history, including the spectacular devaluation of our two most prized assets due to the incompetence of those running the club?

At that time the team needed a central defender, a Defensive midfielder and a proper left back to move the side forward.

The team had Carbone for the flair and did not need DiCanio or any other flair player.

You've got a point because that squad needed a hell of a lot, as it proved when we got relegated a couple of seasons later in a horrendous campaign. I thought we were rather fortunate to finish 7th the season before. But one creative player in the squad is spreading it a bit thin, especially if that guy gets injured. A squad with so little flair looks rather like the one we have now.

We NEVER got the team spirit back we had that season for nearly a decade.

We constantly

brought players to the club who were more individuals than a TEAM, and the TEAM spirit was terrible.

Reports from multiple sources indicate that the dressing room was very much split between UK and overseas players for a few years around that time. From what I've seen and heard, it was the British contingent that were mostly to blame for that too.

True, after the 96/97 season, that's when we began to really get the imports in, mind you it didn't help when an overseas player slagged of his team mates in the papers at home.
