Nigel Worthington - Wednesday Days

Recommended Posts

Wish we had players of that calibre and class now. It was a brilliant time to watch Wednesday, when we had the likes of Nilsson; Harkes, King and Worthington, overlapping and covering each other on the flanks and setting up goals. Don't know if it was ahead of its time or not but it seems like we were blessed with top class modern full backs back in those days. They set up so many goals and created many chances, like many of the top full backs do these days.

Irish was Mr Dependable, always performed, rarely let you down.

I always think of Denis Irwin when I think of Irish. Similar players, similar era. Irwin was just that little bit better. 8/10 to Irish's 7/10 every week.

i think Irwin was a much better player than Worthington to be fair.

I'm not disagreeing with you. But give Irish his dues. As I said, a solid 7/10 performer.

Went down in my estimation when he put a transfer request in as soon as we got relegated in 1990.

Always preffered Kingy but Worthington was a steady eddie. Tackling was powder puff but good engine.

Was never aware of that

For me, he was a quality defender but quite limited when on the ball. How many times did we see him clip the ball down the wing after winning it in a tackle. It always surprised me that Big Ron put King at left back and Worthington left midfield, but I guess that's why he's was good manager and I was just a fan! However, it did enable King to go bombing past him and put crosses in.

For a time, he and Nilsson were arguably the best full back pairing in the league.

There was a picture  in Just another Wednesday (fanzine) of him running down the wing towards the leppings lane end with the caption "You'll never catch me playing in Division 2" which, all things considered, was funny and sad at the same time.
