dunsbyowl
Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now - On this day in 1970 Wednesday lost their penultimate home match in Division 1 to the 1969/70 Champions Everton. Wednesday clapped Harry Catterick's team onto the Hillsborough pitch but Wednesday were no match for Everton going down to a goal by Morrissey, in front of a crowd of 30,896 . Only Manchester United and Manchchester City stood between Wednesday and relegation. Looks like we were on BBC1 that night though can't find any footage. I assume these photos are from this match. State of that pitch! Edited April 4, 2020 by dunsbyowl

Absolutely, I am sure we hit the woodwork a couple of times as well. Just wouldn't go in!

Bramhall Owl
It's not difficult to see why we went down. There were only 2 survivors from the Cup Final (and one of those was Ellis who wouldn't have played if Mobley hadn't been injured in the semi) but the lack of investment in the team since '66 showed as of the replacements there's only Craig who would have got anywhere near the '66 team. fredmciverslovechild
What did for us was Man City's fixture congestion after getting to the Cup Winners Cup Final. They played that same day at home to Sunderland, and then at home to Palace on the Monday and away to Southampton on the Wednesday. The game against Palace was vital; City fielded a much under-strength side (not surprisingly) and Palace beat them 1-0. It was the result which ultimately sent us down as it meant we then had to get a win and a draw from our last two games which, of course, we failed to do. Having said that, we were given every chance to beat City but that's another story....
