Football isn't it

Look at Spurs today. What's the weekly wage of that squad? £20m?

And the club are taking taxpayers money to pay the cleaners and the like. Disgusting

Obviously meant £2.0m not 20!

100%. Footballers are a very easy target, and rightly so, however I think politicians should also be taking a look at themselves.

Why? MP's get what £60k a year? Half a weeks wage for a prem player

the players union got them that deal way back when they were little more than slaves to capitalist owners …...so I wouldn't  be blaming the players for turning the tables on there former owners …

Even as charities and small businesses suffer and clubs go out of existence? A Pyrrhic (not to mention, despicable) victory. The situation is rather different now than it was in 1992 or whenever isn't it?

If they can't make sacrifices in these times...

How would you feel if someone told you your salary was going to be reduced by 63% instead then. Have you never said something in the heat of the moment that was an exaggeration when trying to make a point? The fact is our payments as fans cover 37% which leaves the owner needing to find a further 63%.

Mistakes have been made in this sense by him in terms of salaries and not selling players but this quote was well over a year ago. All he can do is improve on the mistakes that have been made.

Agree. When will that ever start happening is the question

Think it would be a PR disaster for football in this country if players in the top 2 divisions didn't make some sort of financial sacrifice in the current circumstances.

Especially as a lot if players seem to put out virtue signalling tweets about the NHS and staying safe.

Is it that simple? If they sacrifice salary it is for the benefit of presumably the club owners. It certainly does not benefit the government and other tax payers if the tax that the players pay on their salaries which contributes to the NHS cost is simply left in the pockets of say the Glasers.

Think it is morally wrong at moment of national crisis for Premier League clubs to be paying players £150k per week when some are laying off non playing staff on low wages & asking the taxpayer to pick up the bill.

It is but unfortunately player power is a factor and their rights will be better protected. Clubs as a whole are trying to come to an agreement on this with involvement from the PFA but when the talks collectively involve all Premier League and EFL clubs, the financial position of various clubs will differ significantly. It is good to see some of the big European clubs & players have taken a stance on this.

While the dithering goes on Gordon Taylor continues to pick up his 2 million per year.

It has already hit the fan in France . Canal have refused to pay their next instalment of tv  right money which presumably hits the clubs in the pocket and either the club takes the hit or pass it on to the players.

The clubs taking the furlough is certainly unsavoury whatever the players do- I made the point in the other thread that was "praising" Chansiri but I'm not sure how just reducing the players  wages for the benefit of millionaire owners is a moral triumph. At least the player is paying tax on his salary.

It's over a third, and in context nearly a half

Regardless, it was very fu cking dismissive and disrespectful at a time he was demanding we pay more

It’s funny if it’s not important then why rip the fans off and not charge the going rate ?
