Gordon Watson names his top eleven he's played with

Recommended Posts

Former Sheffield Wednesday striker Gordon Watson tonight named his best 11 lineup of players he's played with.

In goal Chris Woods

A centreback pairing of Nigel Pearson and Des Walker

Right back Roland Nilsson of course

He's not bothered with a left back

lol

In midfield Carlton Palmer, John Sheridan bossing it

Out wide Chris Waddle and Matthew Le Tissier

And up front Alan Shearer, Mark Bright, and David Hirst

Flash has put himself on the bench instead of starting...

Here is Mark Brights

Is that Mark Bright’s Wednesday line up or all time line up? The reason I ask is that Bright played alongside Gary Lineker and Ian Wright; I’m surprised that at least one of them isn’t there.

Nigel Jemson has put his together

I’m glad to see Danny Wilson in Jemson’s team. Wilson was a fantastic player.

It’s easy to pick. Just put the 1991/1992 team in and we’re done!

Would have loved to have seen Sheridan; Waddle, Le Tissier, Shearer and Hirst in the same side at their peak, that would have be frightening. That would have been a cracking team if he had selected a left back instead of an extra attacker.

Wonder why they all seem to choose Woods between the sticks? When many of us would probably favour the likes of Springett; Pressman, Turner or Hodge over Woods? Woods did come with pedigree but in hindsight, Pressman was more than capable of being our number 1 at the time. Their selected teams show just how many class players we had in the early 90s, the calibre of players we can only look back at or dream of ever seeing again in a Wednesday shirt.

Don't think any of them played with Springett. :duntmatter:

Watson used to annoy the f**k out of me. Got in some great positions without the finishing to match.

Interesting, the players all seem to choose Woods over Pressman. Tough call. Many have not forgiven Woods for his blunders.

                          Woods

Nilsson.     Pearson.   Walker.   Worthington

Waddle.    Palmer.   Sheridan  Alexandersson

.                   Di Canio.  Hirst

No it isn't.

This is Mark Bright's all time team.

                          Woods

Petrescu.     Walker.   Thorn.   Nilsson.

Waddle.    Sheridan.   Gray.  Barnes.

.                   Hirst.  Wright.

Here is Nigel Pearsons all time team.

                          Schwarzer.

Nilsson.     Walker.   Shirtcliffe.   Worthington.

Merson.    Emerson.   Robson.  Waddle.

.                   Juninho.  Hirst.

Also Worthington, tightest man in the World.

He roomed with Pearson, he says Worthington used to go downstairs to use the Hotel payphone, because it was cheaper

No Sheridan. Wow! That’s controversial. It’d be interesting to see if Palmer is in Sheridan’s 11.

When did Brighty play alongside Lineker?

EDIT: Just seen that they were in the same squad at Leicester but only for a year and Bright hardly got a look in at that time so doubt they spent much time on the pitch together and it was before Lineker's prime.

Interesting that Petrescu makes Bright's all time team but not his Wednesday team! :ghoulguy:

I suppose if you are asked this question often enough from time to time the odd change will happen.

Got to agree on Woods. There were many games in 91-92 and 92-93 when he was excellent but it is difficult to forget the blunders against the Blunts and the cup final. Also remember the period around when he lost his place in 93-94, conceded 3 in about 15 minutes when we were 3-0 up against Norwich and 4 at Newcastle.

Pressman seemed to be on top form when we played Utd which helps his cause.

My team would be pretty much the same as yours but I might try and squeeze Carbone in. He gave us a big lift in 96-97 when the fantastic start had gone flat and he was very good in 98-99 after Di Canio had departed. He scored some amazing goals.

I was torn between Alexandersson & Carbone. Niclas was a more natural fit in midfield. His performances here and the career he had inc 100+ caps for Sweden were impressive.

Always hard to pick a best XI. Had to leave many personal faves out like Warhurst, Bart-Wiliams, and Degryse.

Agree in terms of that formation Alex would be a better fit and he was a really good player for us. Degryse was a brilliant footballer, probably past his best when he came to us and we generally struggled that season so I think he often gets overlooked somewhat.
