Probably haven’t played at Hillsborough for a while, but Portsmouth always seem to travel in good numbers, especially given their geographical location and distances involved. They have a famous fan - Pompey Jack - instantly recognisable, met him at AFC Wimbledon recently. A real character - bit like Tango, but much more likeable.

runs a bookstore in Portsmouth. Like you said a real fan.

Chelsea fans in the famous league cup draw that ended up 4-4 AET

I remember them singing ‘one man went to mow’ all way through first half and at half time despite being 3-0 down

That was mine too. I was involved in the ‘kerfuffle’ in the south stand before kick off too.....those were the days.

honourable mention too Man City about the same time, think we relegated them that match?

The only ones who I have seen officially bring 14,000 for a match against Wednesday apart from that lot on boxing Day 1979, was Coventry City in the 6th Round cup tie 1987, when they turned us over 3-1 and went on to win the Final, others of note were Newcastle 1980/81 first game where I would guess in an attendance given as 26,164 around 8,000 of them turned up, they brought more in 1983/84 in a crowd of 41,134 at least 10,000 came, it was reported around 8,000 Norwich fans turned up for the last game of the 1981/82 season, but the official attendance given was only 24,687 so I'm not so sure it was quite that many, and finally Leeds in 1982/83 out of a crowd of 29,050 a guesstimate of between 8,000 and 10,000. Only the Coventry City and Boxing Day matches mentioned were 'All Ticket' games, the rest being pay on day back then so the numbers are approximate of course. Anybody remember the 49,357 attendance for the Liverpool cup game in 1983/84 ? Well I would guess around only 2,000 to 3,000 scousers on the Leppings lane End that night, although the crowd obviously was boosted by a few neutrals, Wednesday always traditionally could pull a decent crowd in Hillsborough for big games.

I dont think it was that many   could barely   hear them

Worst support in numbers was Shrewsbury 81/82 season I think. It was a night match and an absolutely dreadful game. I counted THREE on the Lep.

Same season we played Bristol City in league cup 2nd leg (think they were Div 4), me and my mate were on the Lepp, could only see 2 of their fans stood near us and another 2 in the upper.

Easy this,Birmingham City in Jan,1969,FA cup 4th round, their supporters that day just roared them on,leppings lane and some parts of both the south and north stand were rammed with Brummies,I can honestly say in ALL my years going to Hillsborough,I have NEVER seen support like that, when they sang "Walk On" at 1-2 to them,it was a sea of blue and white and it was DEAFENING,there wasnt an inch of that end that didnt hold up a blue and white scarf, even the NW corner as its now known, its stuck with me all these years from being a kid, they were an absolute credit to a very good side, over 52,000 that day in the ground

Surely they brought way more than that, they are the best fans ever travelling in huge numbers!!lol

You're right though, I was amazed how few they brought that night, they only had 2 pens on the Lep

Villa 74/75 season always sticks with me , they were all over our Kop , I was only 11 year old but remember how embarrassing it was as we lost 4-0 and were already relegated , this result confirmed their promotion , same season Man utd the 4-4 game , didn't go but seen it on tv and my dad went on the Kop , fights breaking out everywhere think there was 35,000 that day about 20,000 were man u !

Early 80's. Vs Millwall midweek. Millwall fans on the "tango Triangle" and Ethel made her way through us on the kop to get to them.

Ethel was their "Sammy" I guess.

often wonder how the police got them through the turnstiles  then  onto the triangle   then out again     and how did half time work did they have to have a police escort

Used to put away fans with small followings in there quite often in those days. I used to stand in there with my old man and we got mixed in with them a few times though thankfully not when Millwall came. Think the time mentioned was a night match and when we scored first, the Millwall fans 'had a go' at the kop but were soon beaten back.

Don't know if they were the best but the bravest maybe Wrexham at home put them on the cop triangle all 40 of them think they were bottom of the league and won 3-0 I think imagine that happening today 😂😂

Remember it well from stood on the Lepp.

They went crackers when they scored.

First time I ever saw us lose and my Dad had been taking me to the odd matches for Years.

Hate to say it but Leeds that Friday game where Kirkland got smacked, they made some noise that game.

Horrible rumblezoids but made an atmosphere.

They got slapped after and went for a jog up middlewood road after. F.uck ‘em.

Nothing compared to Villa, Sunderland, Man City, Chelsea, Rangers etc. Different league.
