Newcastle away was the game before the final.... I'll always remember it because there was only about 15000 there and Wednesday took a couple of thousand. Had a reyt session that day.

When Keegan took over, Newcastle were close to the bottom of the Second Division and getting around 14,000 to each home match.

However, I particularly remember this midweek match as I was working in Scotland at the time and Newcastle was only a few inches away from Glasgow on the map.

Tow hours later, I arrived in Newcastle but St James Park is one of those grounds you can see from miles round but it takes ages to get there so I arrived just after the kick off.

Fans were locked in pens in those days and, as I was late, I was stood at the edge of the pen near the door with a load of police lined up on the other side of the fence. The Wednesday supporter next to me was about seven foot tall and must have been 25 stone. He was offering out anybody in black and white and even threatening the police directly next to us.

Suddenly, the police rushed the gate and a snatch squad jumped into our pen. I thought "great, this'll shut him up" but the cops steered well clear on Giant Haystacks on my right and burrowed deep into the Wednesday fans where they grabbed a bewildered young lad who, frankly, wasn't doing anything despite his slight frame, fresh-faced looks and non-threatening demeanour. They tied his arms and legs into knots and dragged him out where it appeared they continued beating him purely because he wouldn't retaliate.

After the melee, I asked the cop through the fence next to me "Why didn't you get this fouled mouthed chump next to me?"

"Have you seen the size of him?" said the copper. And, for once, and to a degree, I could sympathise with the police on their judgement.

As for the match, I think Micky Quinn scored the Newcastle winner (1-0) after a Wednesday defensive mix up? The announcer did wish us well for the Cup Final the following weekend, though.

Wasn't Chelsea at home?

No, definately away. Indelibly imprinted on my brain even 40 years later. Inter City Owl train was at Paddington, and the underground pulled in from Fulham Broadway. Must have been 4 or 500 hundred Chelsea there, absolute carnage. Police lost control, remember they had handcuffed a Chelsea fan to a railing. And them sent the Wednesday fans down the same passageway. Left him in a pretty bad way i suspect.

Think Chelsea were taken aback how we had a go back at them, even if there was no choice. If you wern't up for it that day , you never would be

Yep.

And remember the large wooden cable drum launched off a roof in Newcastle. How that didn't kill someone i'll never know

Remember a crush at Oxford in the promotion season 79/80. Finally paid to get in to find the gates had been kicked in and everyone had got in free. There were some gardens/allotments on the left hand side of the away end and at one point, a ladder appeared against the wall and a few more clambered up it to get in for free. We took a few thousand that day but i doubt Oxford made much in gate receipts.

Yeah i remember that crush at Oxford, scary stuff.

Newcastle away in 1983/84, the 1-0 victory with Shelton's overhead kick.

we left the ground and 8,000 Wednesday fans turned left towards the train station/coach park and we turned right towards where we parked the car, there must have been about 30/40 of us in small dribs and drabs, we turned the corner and there was roughly 7/800 Newcastle fans taking turns at running across the road and throwing punches/bricks anything they could get their hands on at the Wednesday fans, didn't matter if they were old blokes or young kids they got attacked. most of the cars had their windows put through as they were driving away.

Chelsea was always dodgy. Going back to the late 70's when they used to keep away fans in the ground for 30/40 minutes after the final whistle. The away end at the time was the open end with the railway behind. Problem was because of that only one way out of the ground which was via the Shed end. We were always in the car so had to split off from the main train escort. With anybody on a coach. The side streets adjacent to the Shed were just full of Chelsea waiting to pick fans off.  Seen many different things, some of our fans taking a hiding, bottles and bricks flying everywhere and once Chelsea blocking the road to our transport only for the police to help our fans literally fight their way back to the carpark.

Stoke away early 80’s old Victoria ground think it was cup. Absolute carnage everywhere. Carlisle and West Ham were also entertaining.

Went to Newcastle once and someone was firing an air rifle at us from some flats.

Our coach turned right as well and was stuck in the middle of the town centre on its own surrounded by hundreds of very angry geordies. That was interesting.

Nasty trip to Deepdale in 75 or 76 We lost, but more than that, Police seemed happy for their lads to lay into us and the coach got bricked on the way home. Other than that, deffo the West Ham trip in the early 80s when the Police marched us to the ground past the market place  and they all came out the pub throwing stuff and giving nazi salutes. I think Ante Mirocevic scored for us and I remember David Cross scoring and then jumping on the fence in front of us and giving us dogs abuse. Cannot remember  if he scored twice. Other than that getting out of Stamford Bridge could be as they say these days challenging. Apart from that getting through the station at Forrest could be interesting on the steps.

Went all the way down to Gillingham, the first game after Boxingday massacre, to find out it had been postponed due to frozen pitch.

On the way back the coach stopped at Coventry to take in their match and we were escorted in the Boro "away" end....had a few eyebrows raised at us, amongst other things...

I was on one of those coaches. Supporters club coaches from memory.
