Can we see that every week?

Yes why can't they? In not like they to get up every morning with the realisation that they have to perform for 8 hours for a bunch of bosses they despise , longing for the next weekend & holiday booked. Which is the reality for most of in the real world. There's no excuse for not putting the effort in, they're privileged people.

I agree and the truth is I don't know.

Like I say, rather than getting resentful that they can't do it more often, I'm choosing to be hopeful that this might galvanise them... I'm probably clutching at straws.

Agree with the OP, effort and commitment was very good, tactics though, typical Monk. It’s a cup game, it’s not about damage limitation, Wigan beat City by getting on the front foot, and taking the game to them

Disagree.  We rode our luck and looked as inept and toothless as usual, save for a miracle 7 min stretch.

I'm glad Hunt got more run, FF showed workrate, Bannan made an impression, but other than that? Real anonymity

Only impression BB made was having a go at his team mates, he was useless tonight and I usuallý stick up for him.

Obviously not the 1-0 mauling or the lack of any real interest in going forward from the manager...

But the team keeping its shape, every player giving it everything and not letting our heads drop when things go against us. Its all the fans ask and would see us remaining a Championship side next season.

A big part of me thinks, why can't we work so hard every game? But I'd rather just praise the effort tonight and tell the players that if you keep that up for the rest of the season, then we'll back you 100%

Be nice for us to get over the half way line.

I’ve never been more embarrassed after last night, anyone who takes anything close to a positive from that has been sniffing coke

I feel every other team in the championship would have given it more of a go then us. 1 bloody shot all game which IIRC was a blocked attempt. No more than 2 passes out together. 20% possession when in all honesty it felt like about 5%, it was utterly humiliating. And the pre match video on us was equally depressing. If anything told us that we’re stuck in the 90s just watch that video, then the cameras turned to the soulless stadium.

Just all in all a horrid night

What pre match video and which soulless stadium? Crowd got behind the team all game I thought.

Mate the crowd only perked up in the last 5 mins when city’s defence were pisssing about and we had the smallest glimmer of actually getting a shot off

the video on Chris waddle and Benito carbone, all footage was based from the 90s

Which stand were you in? From my seat in the North I heard plenty of support and noise all the way through the game. Was the video shown on the screen? I saw olthe highlights of the semi v the pigs but didn't see the other stuff. Wouldn't mind seeing that, always like good reminisce and like to show my son.

Yes I know it was City, but in all honesty that game showed that we are light years away from being a premier league team.

We basically need a whole new squad and a new manager.

Monk set us up to contain, that's just not good enough. Being a Wednesdayite is to be proud. There was nothing proud about not attacking or at least having an attacking plan.

On the very few occasions we got the ball we had no idea what to do. The point of a football match is to score goals.

At the very minimum I expected us to start building up pressure after the first half and in to the final third.

He needs sacking. And Chansiri needs to take a look at the Wolves model. They had ready made premier league players.

Ps - if Dawson had been in the net he would have shipped 3 goals by half time.

We played a flat back 9!!

I don't think the effort was any different at all  - we just were less open due to pure defensive numbers

They didn't have a shot on target in the first half so that would have been difficult you pudding

Yes I would love us to keep our discipline at the back like we did last night. However we need to bloody attack more, not just last night but in so many other games our attacking has been so poor. On Saturday I really hope to see Wildsmith, Iorfa and Hunt starting. Really impressed with those 3 especially last night.

Did you except us to try and play any other way last night though?

It wasn't necessarily the effort, more the application of it; I think everyone played with a discipline within the system (even if it was a flat back 9 )

The main encouraging thing though, was that at no point did any heads drop... It took 8mins against Derby!

Can't believe all the negative comments we played well tonight and I hope it can continue.

What. Not having any credible attacks. 9 men behind the ball with one up top who nobody could hit with any accuracy. Fans having to urge some attacking play cos Monk had his hands in his pockets playing pocket billiards.  Sorry. Not for me

I expected nothing different to be honest - it was the obvious way to go (maybe go in their half for the last 15 minutes or so might have been nice)

The ''application'' of it was the bare minimum i'd expect from a footballer - they got in the way and ran about  - when they finally had the ball  - the composure/the ability was as poor if not worse than it has been of late

Hunt showed more in the 20 minutes or so than most did for the whole match. Got stuck in and was able to pass 5 yards

We are a billion miles off them - i understand that and i wonder whether the relief of the 1-0 scoreline is overshadowing a pretty average performance by most of the team.

I thought bar Hunt's cameo, only really Iorfa came out with any real credit

Listen Man City are capable of ragging any team in the world and I expected us to lose ... probably more heavily than by 1 goal ... but it's a foookin one off cup match FFS!

Let's at least throw off the caution and try and score a flippinggoal.

Monk is a total embarrassment to his profession ... He's absolutely sh*t scared of committing anyone forward.

Why he left that da Cruz on instead of FF god only knows.

Pelupessy ... hahahahaha ... Never ever has he been a footballer.

Well done Wildsmith, Iorfa and Palmer.

Roll on summer when we can unload Monk.

Listen

You're right.

That match just summarised how many light years, even decades we are behind.

If the game was played until the end of May we wouldn't score.

I've been to England games against the likes of Andorra. Tonight i witnessed the other end of the scale. If you were entertained or enjoyed that then fair play. Not for me.

Let's see if there's still the same passion away at Brentford.

A light year is significantly longer than a decade..

It would take voyager 2 some 37,000 years to travel one light year.

Just sayin!

getting on the front foot? Wigan had 18% possession against 10 men and had a total of 4 shots. They used the same game plan and scored late on to nick a result, we didn't make the most of the set pieces and possession when we had it in the final third. That was the difference between the two games, a bit of luck for Wigan with the sending off and goal well taken by Grigg.

tonight's result should help the squad's confidence. Going out there and taking the game to city and being open would have led to a disaster and would have absolutely ruined the players confidence.
