I don't doubt for a second they were trying, Pep was "furious" in his own ways on the side over his side's inability to break us down. Which makes the defeat a little worse, because this cup tie was there for the taking. We were never going to have much possession, but if you take your chances when you do have the ball, you don't need much possession to score a goal. Bravo and the City defense didn't impress me much; we just didn't have any creativity or will to challenge them on the offense.

The first time in my lifetime supporting Wednesday (two weeks and one day) that I actually felt we set up to lose from the start. Just not by a big margin.

"pelupessy?  I've never see a central midfielder be this uninvolved the entire game...."

Wow.  Not wrong in the least.

Absolutely not fit for purpose.

What do we expect when we buy players from the "whoops counter" :duntmatter:

I agree. But we didn't attack them with overlapping full backs and centre half's, 2 wingers and 3 up top so it was embarrassing. Or so I'm told by the armchair experts on here.

We didn’t attack full stop. Took our most attacking player off at 1-0 down.

He's a defensive midfielder, his job is to to break up attacks, hold the shape and protect the centre backs... he doesn't do any of this. He just looks absolutely lost at this level and I really don't understand how he keeps getting a shirt. I tried giving him the benefit of the doubt, it's a boring role to play and much of your work goes unnoticed but I've paid close attention to him over the last few games and I've come to conclusion he's absolutely cat meat. His biggest weakness is his positioning, constantly lets his man drift past him, which has led to so many soft goals recently. At one point last night, Iorfa ran past him in the 85th min as cautious Joey failed to recognise that we were 1-0 down with 5 minutes left, opting to continue to sit deep and offer absolutely nothing to the team.

A fraud of a  footballer and the worst defensive midfielder I've ever seen play for SWFC - and we once had Darren Potter ffs!

Yeah, and this is the problem.  I checked his stats last night - think it was something like 8 passes and 0 tackles.  I'm pretty sure he recorded 0 tackles in another game recently (Barnsley away maybe?).  For the role he allegedly plays, I cannot understand how you go through a game with 0 tackles.  Bannan had 3 last night ffs, even manged to win 1.

Better than Hutchinson who keeps getting injured, booked, sent off.........

£300k Lower league Dutch player in FAILS TO SEE MUCH OF THE BALL AGAINST SILVA, RODRI AND SILVA SHOCKER!

So why was he picked then?
If we can see it why not Monk???

Where’s Hutchinson? Oh I forgot, injured, sent off, not good enough, bad for morale???

Does anyone think his role was just to nullify David Silva, he seemed to spend most of the time trying, and failing, to get close enough to him to get a tackle in

If he really made 0 tackles in a game as a defensive midfielder that just sums him up..... truly terrible, total passenger

I think if you asked Joey what his role was he would just  look at you completely bemused. Say something like “Role?”.

If blocking space in central areas constitutes to working hard then I'll bring my boots with me on Saturday.

Joey Pelupessy can't take credit for limiting the scoreline to 1-0. That was down to us sitting 11 behind the ball (understandably), City's slow tempo and a host of wasted chances.

You know Joey's poor when he's not even fit enough to lace Jose Semedo's Steve Adams's boots...

Paul McLaren was considered

Posted (edited)

I was thinking about this last night......I watched the game, like to think I can read what we're trying to achieve tactically and the nuances of the specific player roles. I have to admit, until the commentators made that comment I had 100% forgotten JP was on the field and I too couldn't recall even seeing him let alone being in the action.

All that said, in order to fully assess if he had any impact on the game you'd need to watch analysis that follows the player and not the ball as we see on TV. Logic suggests he was anonymous but the scoreline suggests he must have been effective to some degree......

I’m generally a Dawson fan .. but I had to give this a smiley .. you simply cannot beat a good dose of gallows humor when discussing all things SWFC

There’s not much between them in all honesty.

I do think Dawson’s head drops a bit when he makes a boo boo and Wildsmith seemed to recover a bit better from the setback.

They’re both decent enough I think

The real agony of the goalkeeping situation is that our 3rd choice keeper is our highest paid keeper and is sat at home on circa £25k a week until 30 June 2021 ... if you didn’t laugh you’d cry
