Has Rooney played at Hillsborough before?

Recommended Posts

I'm looking forward to sering him play but hope he has a nightmare and we win, obviously. I'm glad he's past his best as he hopefully won't hurt us too much but will be dangerous from free kicks round the box which we seem pretty good at giving away. If he's still got the same workrate and commitment he'll be a real handful. Might have to get hutch back to mark him. lol

I don't get these posts to be honest, you were both replying to someone attacking his character. Football achievements shouldn't have even the slightest thing to do with what you think of him as a person. If he's a d!ck, he's a d!ck.

(I don't actually know if he is a d!ick or not and have no opinion either way. He doesn't play for us so I don't care.)

What’s he attacking his character for? Does he know him?

I don’t care that much either, just thought it was a bit strange to say this...

‘he's a total bell, no class, everything that's wrong with football and an absolute weapon’

about a footballer who’s probably achieved more than any English footballer since 1966

Are some people really actually genuinely going to boo Wayne Rooney?

What a strange world

Yes, and ironically some of them will probably only be bothering going to the game to see him.

Booing an opponent because he's a top player - bizarre.

Christ he was only asking , I was thinking the same the other day , get over yourself , he will most likely be head and shoulders above any other player if he plays regardless of his private life and personality

Hmmm, my left b*llock has more.

Particularly when he's never done anything against us to hate him for.

This is what kills me about Wednesday fans.... only a few seasons ago the Kop gave a standing ovation to Tony McMahon simply because he previously had a loan spell where he played a massive 15 games for us. It was made more embarrassing by the fact that a section of supporters were booing some of our own players.

Yet a real legend in the game is visiting Hillsborough and there is so much hatred probably based on what people have read in the red tops.

He was very good in those 3/4 games - and delivered on other occasions for England and Man U for years after.

Pretty much stayed fit; particularly for someone who came into the game at a very early age. He was big for a 17/18 year old and held is own. We now seem to have to wait until someone's' 23 before they're considered for first team action.

Not sure how effective he's been at Derby, but commercially he have brought in a few bob.

13 games, 4 goals, 2 assists. Pretty decent return considering he's only just getting back up to speed with the English game.

He scored a proper filthy Paneka penalty last week too.

Nowt to do with Rooney really but that is a misleading stat. Of course it is technically correct in terms of numbers but modern international strikers will score more goals almost by default because of the political changes in the world. The USSR and Yugoslavia that were strong collectively in footballing terms have been broken up creating cannon fodder satellite nations allowing the more recent England players to fill their boots. A luxury that their predecessors didn't have the advantage of skewing the scoring records.

Bobby Charlton scored England hattricks against USA (won 8-1), Luxemburg (won 9-0), Mexico (won 8-0), Switzerland (won 8-1), etc.

Jimmy Greaves scored England hattricks against Luxemburg (won 8-0), Scotland (won 9-3), Northern Ireland (won 8-3), Norway (won 6-1), etc.

If anything, there are fewer one-sided matches in the modern era, not more.

So go on then, how many were / are?   If those two are the measure of a great player then only a handful could ever be regarded as such.  An outstanding player who came up a little short when compared with the very best, but still a class act on the pitch.

You totally miss the point it wasn’t me that put him in that bracket

I remember in my earlier days watching football that qualifying groups for the World Cup and European Nations Cup used to be comprised of four teams. Each group usually consisted of two strong nations like Italy and England for the 1978 WC and two weaker nations. Only one team qualified.

These days because of the break up of the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia etc., there are so many small nations or republics in the UEFA Region such as Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kosovo, Albania, Montenegro, Serbia, Moldova etc. Most of them consist of players that would struggle to cut it in the lower English leagues let alone amongst the elite of European football. Add those nations to the already existing cannon fodder such as the Faroe Islands, San Marino, Luxembourg etc., and it is easy to see why strikers at the top level of European football are racking up huge international hauls.

Because of that, qualification groups now consist of six nations. The best nations are seeded and put in separate groups so not playing each other in the qualifying rounds or the early rounds of the tournament proper. From each group, two teams qualify and possibly a third through eliminators. That also means more games for players within the tournament proper and the early rounds again containing a lot of weak opposition.

The upshot is that in the modern game, players that are regular internationals are virtually guaranteed ten qualifier stage matches every two years against generally very weak opposition then more goal fests in the early rounds of the tournament proper.

Great isn't it that all league matches are cancelled due to back to back internationals against Montenegro and Kosovo (or summat similar)? :duntmatter:
