Fletcher & Rhodes - Impressive

Recommended Posts

This came up earlier discussing briefly with @Inspector Lestrade and @gurujuan

who were pretty dismissive of anyone who has partnered Fletcher this season.

Here’s the Fletcher-Rhodes pairing this season:-

Millwall Away - 25 minutes - no team goals

Swansea Home - 7 minutes - 1 team goal

Brentford Home - 45 minutes - 2 team goals - Fletcher 2

Derby Away - 72 minutes - 1 team goal - Fletcher

Forest Away - 87 minutes - 4 team goals - Fletcher Rhodes 3

Hull  Home - 30 minutes - no team goals

266 minutes in tandem

8 team goals

Team goal every 33 minutes (compared to every 82 minutes otherwise)

Fletcher 4 goals

Rhodes 3 goals

As soon as Fletcher is back I hope this is given a few games to see if this really promising early courtship could blossom into a fabulous long-lasting marriage.

Well why you didn't say that.

I fear I will actually vomit if I see Rhodes start again for us.

What don’t you like about the partnership that has seen the team score 8 goals at a rate of one every 33 minutes? With the two partners scoring 7 of the 8?

Can we stop this Rhodes obsession.  He is not good enough and arguably pound for pound our worst signing ever.  Let’s move on for crying out loud.

I repeat what I replied to @McRightSide

Take that Forest game out and what do the stats look like?

That game was in a parallel universes never to be repeated. Stars aligned

Apart from Fletcher our main options to play through the middle are Rhodes, Nuhiu, or Winnall - none of whom have been particularly successful for us.

Given the outlay for Rhodes it would make sense that we try to get some return from the investment.  Partnering him with Fletcher seems like the best chance we have of achieving that return.

Why would you look at one of the games they partnered rather than every minute of all six games?

But, to please you, even taking that wonder-game out, the team has scored at a rate of a goal every 44 minutes, compared to a goal every 82 minutes when they’ve not been in tandem.

It's what Fletch and Rhodes have needed, Rhodes has always played off a target-man when he has done well such as Gestede.

Fletch needs someone who is intelligent and someone who can make runs off his hold up play or flick ons, such as a Hooper/Rhodes.

The problem has been managers are obsessed at the moment with playing 1 up top and packing out a midfield.

It happened under CC and from then on, Rhodes coming on for 20 minutes playing as a lone striker etc, its not his game, if your going to play him like that your playing with 10 men play him off a Fletcher/Gestede type player and he will score goals, unfortunately his spell here has gone terrible and in most fans eyes he's finished, its a tough place to come from getting 20 mins up top on your own with a fan base that has written you off.

Same situation with Winnall, he went to Derby after most of our fans had written him off and he scored goals but he does nothing in the 20 minutes he comes on and he should "never play again" "get rid" etc etc... Meanwhile Nuhiu has 47 goals in 268 games, but deserves chance after chance.

Absolutely.

In the final sad episode of Blackadder, Baldrick finally has a cunning plan that would work. Use the “nasty splinter” on the ladder to get Blackie injured and sent back to Blighty. It gets ignored.

We have one chance to

a. Score lots of goals and win matches

b. Get Rhodes price tag back up again.

Lets not ignore it before we’ve tried it.

Very much hope you are wrong.

It would be criminal not to try this partnership some more.

Rhodes only contributed goal wise in one game.  Did he give any assists or was in the build up for any of Fletchers goals?

I so much want Rhodes to get back to somewhere near to what he's capable of achieving but no evidence of it really happening.  Even if he got halfway there it would be a start.

Nice in principle but it’s based on less than three full games of football. In the games stated, all of JRs goals came in one game.

If the return was scaled up over 10 full games, for example, it would be more likely to be significant rather than a freak set of stats.
