Does Monk have what it takes to be a manager

Recommended Posts

I remember when first learning to drive being told "first you learn to pass your test and then you actually learn to drive once you have your license".

I've always thought that you can only really tell whether a manager is any good from their 2nd season onwards and I'm wondering if this is Monk's issue. Despite being in management for a while now he's only ever gone past that first season when at Swansea and that ended badly.

I don't believe he is the underlying issue with our club but I just wonder whether his inexperience isn't helping and that deep down he's a Coach rather than a Manager.

Do we let him get past this season and allow him to put his own ideas in place or do we cut him loose?  If we keep him does he need Director of Football above him ?

Not sure how we can hope for a director of football, when DC won't even allow Monk to bring in his own coaching team.

I think that's been pretty scandalous to be honest. It's a big job, and to tell him his coaches can't come, and all he can have is Bully was foolish.

I agree Mr F, that's why i'm not really sure about Monk.

He's not been given a chance but i'm just wondering if a more experienced Manager would and could have dealt better with the situation.

Personally I'm starting to think Bully may be part of the problems, most likely unintentionally but we need a major overhaul.

It's a big question that needs asking.

Why has Monk not been allowed to bring his coaches in ?

Why is Bully,  part of numerous failed regimes, still a key part of a failed coaching set up ?

How many managers would go to a club knowing they won’t be allowed to bring in their team?

im sure it’s not many

True.

Apparently DC struggled to find any manager of note to come in. Can't imagine why.

Bully is family,  he is part of the fixture and fittings, one day we will get a decorator in and he'll be gone.

If/when he goes and we need a new manager I can’t see ha having many applicants

And this is all my point, is there a understanding within the game that Monk isn't a Manager to be trusted long term which is why he hasn't been able to bring in his own Coaches.

As he been found out early because we are such a basket case

Do we feel he deserves the chance with his own people or do we cut our losses ?

He doesn't even have a staff of his own choosing.

Was this mandated by DC in a costsaving bid?  Or was Monk that full of unwarranted hubris in that he could walk into this project on his own and be successful?

Either way, it's ridiculous.

With the unexpected termination of three salaries (Bruce and his assistants), and a reported £2m compensation from Newcastle, one would think the coaching budget would be sound.

Our failure to spend in this area may have something to do with our finances being a bit foooked.

All roads unfortunately lead to DC.

More to the point does DC have what it takes to be an owner? Results are as bad as Jos' final 10 games, yet it's ludicrous how Monk hasn't got his own staff with him for whatever reasons? Why is Bullen still here during repeated failed reigns? There are far more questions than answers.

We lack leadership on and off the pitch. DC doesn't seem to learn from his mistakes, his absurd off the pitch schemes don't hide the poor recruitment or the ridiculous policy of refusing to sell players on for a profit.

Sacking Monk won't solve all of our issues but results are there to see and he hasn't helped himself by publicly criticising the players. I don't see anyway back for Monk and if we replace him, I can see us in a similar situation next year if we manage to stay up this season.

Personally Monk wasn't one of my preferred choices, I wanted him to prove me wrong but I think his time is clearly up. In the short term I'd bring in someone experienced like Warnock, Hughton or Megson to help us stay up. In the summer a massive rebuild is needed. In the long term, we need to be more sensible and to adopt a more forward thinking long term approach, and to start bringing in players we can potentially sell for a profit.

Maybe that's a sign of Monk's confidence, to be able to acheive something without.

Let's not forget he hasn't had pre season and a mid season transfer window isn't the best time for long term additions.

I believe he's doing a decent job on the fly and has tried different angles. Initially he tried a mostly settled team, recently it's adding new faces and mixing teams up.

He's trying to figure things out for immediate results and the longer term and it's only recently things have gone awry.

I think some expect too much too soon, and this has been amplifyed by the early season push that saw us reach third in the table. It would be unrealistic to expect that run to continue considering the circumstances, and he should be given credit for managing to acheive that.

Step back and see the season as a whole, rather than point to a season high saying "we should be maintaining that".

We have seen these players for many years and we have seen similar things occur with previous managers, I think he deserves a fair crack of the whip...

But what gives rise to confidence that he can rebuild a team. He has little experience of that, yet he is the one we should trust to shape our future for the next 4 years?

He still has to prove he can get this team walking through walls for him, or that he can turn the shambles of the last 10 games around. I'm not sure he can, so I'm less inclined to trust him with our future.

I desperately want him to succeed, but any manager chopping and changing things around doesn't get a free pass on results and these half-hearted, mistake laden performances have gone on long enough. He can keep talking about confidence, but he's responsible for giving it to them, and unfortunately there's no sign he can break the poor run and lacklustre performances.

All the Swansea fans I know rate monk.he did a good job for them

he turned laudrops footballing side into a hoof ball side and left them in horrific shape. Them fans must have very low standards. Mind I have been to Swansea so I can see why lol

Results say otherwise but it may not be his fault.

It’s a very salient question given that Bruce before him actually had his team running the team for a while..  unfortunately I feel it’s too late for Monk anyway . He needed his team when he started

There was enough stuff on the internet at the time of his appointment toi suggest that since Swansea Monk has been a divisive character at every club he's been at. There seem to be quite a number of people within the game who simply won't work with him and I think we can now add a few more to that list.

That is not to say he might not, ultimately, be a good manager but he clearly needs someone, be it a chairman or a DoF, to guide him. There are cliques within every club but that is where strong management stops them spilling out onto the pitch. We need someone who will provide that strength from above; Mandaric would have snuffed this out weeks ago. Instead we have an absentee chairman and a coaching staff whose purpose seems to solely extend to putting the cones out.

Quite honestly without changes at the very top I don't see any way out of this.
