Official Summer Transfer Rumours Thread 2020-2021

Best business we will do this summer is getting rid of the out of contract players, except for Fletcher and the young lads. Some of those players have really outstayed their welcome at the club and some of them are just no where near good enough. Will be very disappointing and annoying if he keeps people like Pessy and Nuhiu.

He shouldn’t keep Pessy and Nuhiu but we’re talking about Monk here?

it’s a big worry. He seems to like nice players, quality doesn’t seem to matter. Be absolutely ridiculous if we keep either of those 2.

To be fair to Nuhiu, like Leon Clarke, he gets slated because he was poor when he first joined the club. Nuhiu has improved and adapted his game to be a reasonable player at this level. Wouldn’t be starting for a promotion candidate but I think he got double figures under Gray and scored a few early on under Carlos. He didn’t feature much after that until Jos gave him a real run and he scored goals. The question is if he goes who do we bring in to do that kind of team/impact role and how much do they cost.

Couldn't agree more and not just those 2. We have an opportunity to breath life and energy into this squad, overdue by about 2 seasons.

We simply can't shoot ourselves in the foot by re-signing players we know aren't good enough.

completely agree. Now is the chance to give this squad a proper makeover. Get rid of the deadwood that isn’t up to the task. We simply have to take this chance.

I think any goodwill Monk has amongst the fan base will totally disappear if he did re-sign them?

He's been at the club 7 years now and I don't think even his biggest fans could argue he's been a success here.

We rarely win when he starts games so why hang on to and waste money on a player who is only useful to bring on for 20 mins or so.

Time to say adios, I'm sure we could find someone  from League 1 or 2 or even Scotland who would be a better option.

Let's face it if he was say a Blackburn player who had been there for the last 7 seasons with the same scoring record and we were proposing to sign him, then most on here would say we were mad.

There's too much emphasis on his scoring record. Much more to being a striker than just that. Using that as the sole barometer then Dennis Bergkamp was a failure at Arsenal after his first couple of seasons.

Nuhiu can be a useful squad player at this level, but no more than that. The real issue for us is what kind of resources are we going to have for a much-needed squad revamp? It's clear a number of players will be leaving so we're forced to make a significant number of signings just to keep the numbers up, never mind making us considerably better. Our financial situation is a big problem and we could be hampered further still, depending on what happens in the EFL hearing. We may not be in a good position for the kind of revolution that some fans seem to be hoping for, or even demanding.

Verily, it’s all very well people saying get rid of this player, or that, but will we be able to adequately replace them with our current budget

We desperately need change or we might as well sleepwalk into league 1 for the umpteenth time. Go down there again and we’re finished as I don’t see the fans sticking by the club like in the past when we’ve been down there?

But if our budget is seriously curtailed (and there is evidence that it probably is), then what kind of standard will be able to bring in? We all know too much of our squad is mediocre (or worse) but there may be limited options for doing much better, especially given the numbers who look likely to be moving on soon.

The fans stuck by the club in the past, I can't see that changing. Obviously gates will drop for L1 football but the majority will still turn up.

Reducing squad size would be a good start. So much wasted budget.

Agree, it’s not a case of 10 players leaving, and 10 coming in The general consensus seems to be two players for every position, plus an extra keeper and striker. Perhaps we could look at another way of doing it, by using a smaller tighter knit squad. Say a core group of 18, with more emphasis on using the U23 squad when needed. A bit like Burnley and Huddersfield have done in the past.

We would then be able to make savings, and in theory, there’d be more continuity with a smaller squad.
It would also present real opportunities for the youngsters, as there would be a clear pathway into the first team squad.
