Popular Post Lord Snooty
Frozen out? Injured? Better things to do on a weekend? Mardy manager? Mardy players? Wage pinchers or slain heroes? No one really has a clue, but the speculation will rumble on. It's a destructive back drop which only seems to rear its ugly head when results haven't been coming. No one really knows other than the players and the manager. It could actual be something really simple "I told you to pick up number 5 on corners!" "Well I picked up the 4 because no bugger was marking him" "Just do as I tell you" See, even I can do it! Monk isn't the first manager to drop some fan favourites and he won't be the last. Christ, he's not the first to do it with this group of players in the last 18 months! If indeed he has dropped them... If you win games of course, it's all quickly forgotten. Well, quickly-ish. There'll be one or two calls for the first couple of weeks of course. "Aye, 7-0 was a good win, but it would have been even better if so and so was playing". And even though that dries up after a succession of wins - with probably only young kids keeping up the calls for the reinstallment of their favourites- and the soothsayers slink to the shadows, firing just the odd arrow from the darkness - "A lucky win. But he's still picked the wrong defender who nearly cost us a goal" - they emerge again when points are dropped. That's the real problem in football management, and one that most managers fear, and the reason why so many mumble along is ... when you drop fan favourites and don't get the win. ~ Which is where we are now. Because that's when the pressure starts to mount. Is it really mounting that much already? Should it be? - Afterall he's barely got his feet under the table. Well yes, it is. Because for many it's only about the now. There are of course bigger problems at Hillsborough than a run if defeats.Things that even some wins won't make go away...a staleness that even 3 points won't hide. We know it. The manager knows it. We've said it. The managers said it! - Things needed freshening up... Things needed freshening up under Carlos. Things needed freshening up under Jos who, despite some moments of absolute lunacy, still saw the main fundamental issue and tried to tackle that big issue head on - but only having a ball of string and piece of fluff to spend, tried and failed to do it with kids. He gambled the short term to fix the long term ...and failed. JOS LUHUKAY - COMPLETELY BONKERS AT TIMES BUT SAW THE BIG ISSUE AND HAD THE BALLS TO TRY TACKLE IT....WITH NO BUDGET! It needed freshening up with Bruce- and we actually let him get some of his own bodies through the door to do so... before he walked out on us. (It's interesting that we thought Bruce needed time to bring in more and offload more...but don't seem to want to afford Monk the same luxury.) Things need freshening up under Monk. But while he attempts to do it the pressure is being applied thickly. Yes it is already starting to mount on Monk. Which is remarkable in some ways, given his short stay here. But less remarklable when held up against the fact so many supporters didn't want him in the first place. Sadly supporters are quite fragile compared to when I was a lad. I'm not sure why. Is it the social media? The over performance of the Blunts? Or do we are we just generally more haughty and inner directed generally these days. Is it more than football? People make their mind up about something and they want that prophecy to be fulfilled. It's almost as if a failure gives them the warm glow as it proves them right. A glow warmer than victory. For this is personal victory. One of self affirmation. For Monk to do well would be for some people to be wrong. And the injury of that is too painful to bear. It's hidden of course behind, wimpers of "I hope I'm wrong". But in reality that's just a face saver , false modesty incase he turns it around. Many people these days though would rather be proved right - it's a soothing massage of the serfdom- than to see success of something they discredited. Even in circumstances that aren't of the managers doing... "I always said he was a poo manager, and I've been proved right!" "But Ted, in a exceptional series of events the entire team were whipped away to Oz in a tornado that hit just after kick off. Are you blaming the manager for that?" "Aye, a proper manager has a better meteorology skills. I knew it that would be a weakness of him all along. " Will Monk be good for us? We don't know. None of us know in reality. It's a chapter yet to be written. He wants to clear out the old guard and bring in new warriors for the long term. But he is going to need to new loan signings to start firing and quickly in the short term if he's to keep the Wolves from his door while he attempts to clear out and rebuild. Because in this day and age no one cares for the next chapter, only being excited in the present one. Under pressure .... nothing like a local derby then... --------------------------------- BARNSLEY -V- WEDNESDAY Saturday 8th February Kick off : 13:30pm Oakwell THE TEAM NEWS --------------------------------- BARNSLEY BARNSLEY will be without injured goalkeeper Sami Radlinger and midfielder Marcel Ritzmaier. Sheffield is a big name with a big history and many people in the club tell me that this is a special game and special derby with many people from Sheffield coming. I hope that many people come to support my team as we need Barnsley fans here supporting us against a big opponent. It is a very difficult game for us. Sheffield is a good team, but not a magic team. Defender Morgan Fox (ankle) is doubtful , if he misses out Odubajo looks set to fill in. “It is a catch 22,I would like another game straight away but maybe sometimes it is good to have that week to build and let the new players have a prolonged period of getting them up to speed and what we need from them. They (the new lads) can get used to us, the players, how we are going to play and what we need to do. I think it probably is a good thing that we have a week prepare because we can work with the new players, integrate them and look forward to the next league game.” Garry Monk Dawson Palmer Iorfa Borner Fox Pelupessy Forestieri Windass Bannan Reach Wickham --------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------ Garry Monk- going about his Hillsborough work 33

Gresh
I know derby matches are usually pretty dour and tight but I've got a good feeling that we're going to smash Barnsley today. Come on Wednesday make it happen.
offalyowl
Brilliant as always snoots and I have to agree with you on the point of everyone was saying that Bruce needs time to fix the team but monk isn't afforded the same opportunity, sometimes I think some of our fans are happy to see us lose just so they could say I told you so, anyway I think we will win 3-1 uto 1

Weshallovercome
Well said, Snoots.......we really need to give a manager some time to sort us out, for me Monk's not done much wrong(although if he plays Pelupessy tomorrow I could change my mind). The 3 loanees proves to me he know's what we're lacking, so we should all try and support him or the managerial merry-go-round will never stop.
s6 owl
Games which we are expected to win are the ones that worry me the most.
Hitcat
Excited by this one. Somehow feels like a new beginning. People seem to forget that we were creating and missing oodles of chances not that long ago. If our attacking players click, we could be in for an exciting second half to the season. 1-3. Or it could all go to shìt. 1
nevthelodgemoorowl
9 out of 10 to Lord snoots for his team; Main bone of contention is the ongoing internal row, Pele cat ? Probably win with Pele cat in the side but won't prove anything of substance in the short term. Players and manager must have mutual respect at the moment it's not there the manager has to take responsibility for that one. Get it sorted ! WAWAW OTU & DTB. COME ON WEDNESDAY GET WITH IT ! 1

scilly owl
I won’t say brilliant Snoots as no doubt you would be unbearable to live with. As for the fragility of the fans , I agree with your theory that social media plays a part in that scenario... before Owlstalk, Twitter etc our opinions were confined to the odd phone in and the letters page in the Green ‘Un, now we can blast off to a much larger audience twice a day should we feel the need. I think that our passion and opinions ( and flakiness) are much the same as they were back in the 70’s and 80’s but in the era of the keyboard warrior everybody gets to hear about it !
striker
I'd like to see the same commitment and attitude we started to show v Millwall, important because Barnsley will be up for this game. I'd also like to see much more attacking threat and a more considered approach than lumping it forward to utilise the pace we have available now. That said, Barnsley are a naive team at times, on a poor run and the points are there for the taking. Big game for Bannon today after relatively poor performances. I've been critical of his positional play and taking easy options of late. Mowatt is a good player for them so can't concede the midfield, Barry needs to get on the ball and affect the game in the right areas further up the pitch. History suggests a score draw, but hope we see a performance today with the impetus of the new signings. 1-2 Wednesday Edited February 8, 2020 by striker
Ronio
Snooty, mi lord. Probably one of the best posts I have genuinely read from you on here, ever.. I truly mean that. From the heart. Can't disagree with a lot of what you say. But I do disagree with some points you make. I don't believe any Wednesday fan, genuinely wants to see us lose any game. In fact many fans are sick of having to put up with the same ineptitude week in week out. Monk, stop creating division and bring the squad together. That is what is needed right now. Put the nonsense, the egos and all the rest of the boloks to bed. We want results we want wins. That is it. Win a game of football.... That is what everything boils down to. Give the fans something to shout about. Anyways, I'm on baby duties.

SwellOwl
Great post and can’t argue with any of it. Today is last chance to make something of the season. 3 games in a week, 3 favourable games. Concentrate today and get back to winning ways. WAWAW!!!
