Myth about our recruitment policy

Bruce was the man for us. The exact type of manager we needed to sort the playing side of the club out imo. poo things turned out the way they did with him.

I’ve long said that SWFC needs a manager with a bigger reputation than the club itself.

The one time we got it in recent times, it looked like it was working.

If I was DC I would be looking at that in future managerial hires

Give over. A manager with a bigger reputation than the club itself.

Our reputation for most alive today is based on a brief period between 1990 and 1994 when we were amazing. I've got a nephew who's 20 this year and never seen us in the premiership. Maybe if the fans weren't so entitled now and lowered expectations that we might play football like we did 29 years ago then we might get behind the team and who knows what might happen.

Basically, we're the football fan version of Boomers. Ok?

It should be a very interesting close season with the amount of players due to be released and the ones we recruit

Reputations are formed over centuries not decades

I’ll see your Bothroyd and raise you with Butterballs.

Bothroyd still wins for me Butterfield still occasionally tried but he was just gash that other waste of space is the worst of the worst to put the shirt on imo

I've seen lots of people- including Biggs endlessly on Twitter- going on about how DC has to change his recruitment policy. No more Abdis, Dave Jones' etc. Go for younger players who are hungry and will increase in value, good value Bosmans and the odd loan.

Well - and no doubt there gonna be some I've missed here - since Carlos went we've signed;

Joey P, Onomah, Hector, Moses, Luongo, Borner, Harris, Iorfa, Windass, Wickham, Da Cruz

Some really good signings in there. Total outlay less than 2m. Iorfa, Borner  Harris and Luongo would get good money. Hector was our player of the year.

So when you actually look at it, rather than just regurgitating what some of the idiots rattle on about forever, DC clearly has changed for some time changed dramatically his transfer policy and there's plenty of cause for optimism this summer when Monk has the chance to reshape the squad

Think the soft embargos forced his hand slightly. Had we been under self imposed embargos in seasons one and two we may not be in our current financial predicament

Sticking plaster mentality though mate.

Well duh, of course it is. Doesn’t mean it isn’t needed, or that it’s any less important to try and identify the right player(s).

I definitely think lessons have been learnt in the last year or two.

Signing on loan is still signing them.  They can't play for us if they haven't signed, can they.  And it's not like you can't sign bad loan players (cough, Bothroyd, cough).

It's like saying you live in a million pound that you rent though.  It isn't an asset you can cash in.  We've traded badly.  It's great loaning players who turn out to be gems, but you pay for the privilege and ultimately someone else profits.

Ultimately our fans don't understand what is needed simply because they can't understand we aren't a "big" club any more.  We need to sell players when they are at their prime.  We should have cashed in on a number of players over the last couple of years to further strengthen the squad.  Instead they will walk away at the end of their contracts for nothing having done nothing more than take millions in wages out of the club.

Our fans wouldn't stand for it though.  It's lovely for a "little" club like Brentford to allow them to punch above their weight.  But we're massive and can't be seen to be a selling club!

So he can't win then

He can't win then? In the days of FFP where we trying to correct first two yrs overspending DC simply MUST use the loan market. Only the major Prem sides don't loan players

Didnt man utd just loan a player

Yes really think it will take a Bruce like manager if we are ever to get promoted. Unfortunately they are few and far between.

Initially I’m sure fans would be upset, but they soon get over it. Joao went, some were upset but now nobody will care.

The club needed to be ruthless. Sure fans might have been upset to see some of the favourites at the time go, but football fans are fickle and reinvesting that money or a couple of wins later, the player we sold is already long in the memory.

Unfortunately now we’ve got to a stage where I don’t think anyone would be sad to see any player leave the club. And they’ll probably leave for nowt.

True.

we need to have a steady rotation of the squad preferably making a profit.

brentford signed a couple of Oxford United players Friday....no doubt they’ll sell him them in a year or two for a obscene amount.

"But it hasn't worked for Brentford, they're still in the same league as us"

Is the inevitable response. This is the same Brentford, by the way, who have finished above us in the table four out of the last six seasons (and will again this year), and who haven't had to sell their stadium for the privilege. Heck, they're getting a brand new one.

Imagine if Wednesday had adopted the same policy when DC took over five years ago... exactly the same rationale except with an owner with seemingly deeper pockets and an extra 10k in crowd revenue for every single home game. You can't help but feel we would be, at the very least, a consistent top 4/5 team.

But to do what Brentford does takes commitment to the process, a little bit of patience and smarts. DC perhaps has one of those. Summer is an opportunity to start doing things the right way... let's please do it.

They are signings though when the OP is talking in a context of having resale value
