Integrity of the FA Cup.

Recommended Posts

The Cup as the competition I grew up watching and loving has disappeared, drowned under a sea of Premiership money. Thousands of fans travel hundreds of miles only to see their clubs field ridiculously weakened teams. There is no longer any respect for the very people that made the competition the fantastic competition it was.

If we draw the snorters, will our club dare to treat us with such disrespect on such an occasion. What do you think.

I generally consider these FA Cup weekends, in the same bucket as International weekends, it's pretty much "there's no football on this weekend" in my mind

Are Liverpool still going one step further than others, and fielding their reserve manager too?

there's some truth in this - a hyped up week's viewing of England vs San Marino, and Kazakhstan marketed like the world cup final in front of kids with clappers doing a Mexican wave cheering England's 5th goal on 70mins before leaving for the tube, or some PL team meekly going out with a second string/kids run out. I see Leicester's U21 are in the EFL cup semis - a total nonsense.

Is the same U21 side that has played recently in Leasing.com Trophy ? :tango:

The League Cup is now almost worthless.

The FA Cup has lost its status, but for me is still a top competition. It used to be on BBC and ITV live, with full national newspaper pull outs on the final day itself.

What a waste.

Thanks Sky (and money) Let's scrap it all and just keep The Prem? zzzzzzzzzz

A long time ago since the FA Cup meant anything. Both sides fielded full strength teams and if you drew on the Saturday afternoon the replay was usually the next Tuesday or Wednesday at 7.30 pm,again with full strength teams. The competition has been hijacked by Sky TV and the money machine.

I do massively agree that the fa cups reputation as the most treasured and famous history has rapidly declined in the last decade.

Personally, I don’t think it is premier league clubs that should take the blame. I think everyone below the championship treats it with the sincerity that it certainly deserves.

Whilst it’s easy to point the finger at commercialism, the competition needs to adapt. I think its ridiculous that we still have replays especially in the early rounds. What purpose is it serving? It will benefit some small teams like shrewsbury who’s fans have a big trip to anfield to look forward to. Why shouldn’t we have extra time in the third round? It’s little things like this that might help to reinvigorate the nation’s interest in it.

Hello mate. You are right about the media coverage of a once prestigious competition. It seems to me that the last thing that matters now is the fans. Ridiculous kick off times to suit advertising and lack of public transport,at weekends especially, and late at night, have lead many to invest in Sky and other broadcasters. Which is what the intention was I suppose.

Off topic slightly from coverage of the FA Cup, but on media coverage of their most important day of the year.... "transfer deadline day".  A full weeks build up and blanket coverage on the day itself that enables journalists to speculate to their hearts content about, usually, nowt.

I laugh whenever I hear about winter breaks

If we had a winter break, clubs would take advantage and jet off to some far place to play lucrative friendlies

Yep, which would completely contradict the constant moaning about fixture congestions.. Winds me up so much

Winter breaks are a joke. Clubs and sponsors would take advantage. Top clubs can already afford to jet off to Dubai or somewhere for a day or so now. They don't need 3 weeks off to earn a bazillion quid more.

And this whole nonsense of playing too many games. There's fewer now than 30 years ago. The only ones whining are those who are in European tournaments that have been changed from all knock-out over 2 legs to groups stages that begin in July. Credit to Wolves for coping with this.  Outside of England's top 6, how many extra games are clubs playing on top of their regular 38 league games and at least 2 or 3 cup games

It's quite cynical for these clubs to field weakened sides in either the FA or League Cups.

FA Cup Final for me when we played in the1993 final was all about kicking off at 3pm and finishing round about 5.15-5.30pm so that fans can get there safely and go home safely. Not any more, the ldiotic Kick off times for both the semi finals and the final itself, means that fans especially from the North now face getting home in the early hours of morning where there's no public transport at all.:tango:
