We’re friends on Facebook and I happily wrote a few memories for you of my times actively supporting us through our ‘lowest times’. Moved to Sheffield when I was 5 in 1970 and despite living the other side of Sheffield toSWFC I chose us to support, or was I was destined to be an Owl. My badge of honour is still being on Look North filmed in our then 55,000 capacity ground, stood on our cast pretty empty Kop, in a record low crowd of 6,905 against Colchester. Still got 150+ programmes from that era. As a previous poster alluded to, some of the over entitled drama queens on Owls Talk wouldn’t have been able to handle those formative early years of supporting this Club You did mate, I've been very lucky in that nearly 200 fans have shared memories one way or another. The vast majority of them are positive about the time - even despite or because of performances on the pitch! 1

Much simpler times mate. No social meeja, no 3 day post mortem’s, no stultifying PC gone mad. You went to the match, had a bevy, if you had a grievance you vented your spleen in the letters section of the Green Un. You even had to use full stops, capitals and things like that. Just imagine!!!! 2

edmontonowl
I wasn't around Sheffield too much mid-70's and couldn't get to games due to other commitments so had to rely on the Saturday afternoon classified results. The no goals period in early '75 brought out all the emotions as the results were readout: Cardiff City 0 (OK here we go, getting excited, we've got a win...) Sheffield Wednesday..... 0 (oh bugger) or when we were at home Sheffield Wednesday 0 (Oh no have we got a draw at least?) Opponents... 1 (bleeeegh, again) The teleprinter was worse cuz you could see them team names coming up and you hung on every letter until the inevitable. So sad. And I never thought about it at the time but where I lived I was the only Owl and the only kid in town with a Sheffield Wednesday emblazoned sports bag I think it all explains my mental state today 1

Thu 29 Apr 1976 SOUTHEND UNITED 2-1 19th 25,802 Eric Potts, Mick Prendergast The game we had to win or draw to avoid relegation to the 4th division. The relief and the aftermatch celebrations were amazing!! The following day was the 1st time I had ever taken a day off work, after hitting the " Crazy Daisy" disco. asteener1867
You got used to the Green 'Un..It hardly ever reflected the game you had been to, and rarely criticised..not like what you get today. Phrases like "A workmanlike Sheffield Wednesday side unluckily went down 1-0 against Oxford United" Workmanlike mean absolutely crap...unluckily means we had a shot hit the old electric scoreboard.... Then there was the "late" entry...usually in bold after the report...it sorta went . "A workmanlike Sheffield Wednesday side held Bolton Wanderers at Blundell park this afternoon.... then................ Bolton Wandererers 2 Sheffield Wednesday 0 Speakin' of Bolton ..I went there in the 70's when we won 1-0...right late on...and none of us knew if the goal had counted , cos there wasn't time to kick off again... I found out back on the coach!!...Have I imagined that?....Think it was 74 or 5? 1

Love Wednesday, loved the 70's, I'm in my sixties now & still think about those days. Same here pal. Didn’t travel to away grounds to the same extent as you did but dammit whether home or away somehow there was more pride in the scarf, more confidence that things could be different. Loved those days and knew once Big Jack arrived that we would be back. Look forward to buying the book.

bigthinrob
Got shoved in the fuc**n Trent once!!!!! Think it was a night match. I was givin it the big one down the stretch at the side of the river that leads to the Trent End & ended up waist fuc**n high. Haven’t a clue when it was , might have even been before the 70s????

31Dec1966
I know the passage of time colours things a little rosier than they actually were but it was a strangely exciting time to be a Wednesdayite. We were truly awful in the 70's but the away days, especially night games were awesome. You'd turn up at an unknown little ground and go in the first turnstile you came to, well, I did anyway, there were no restrictions or "away ends" back then. I'd keep quiet, then the teams would come out (seperately in those days) and when Wednesday appeared there would be cheering from all over the ground! We didn't fill the ground (well, we did sometimes) but there'd be a massive group of Owls (presumably the buses), then pockets all round the ground. Pandemonium when we scored cos it didn't happen very often. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.
REDOWL
April 22nd 1970 was the day the rot set in for ten years. We lost at home to Man City and were relegated to the old second division. We then had ten years of those "darkest times". Five years of undiluted mediocrity in the second division and four years of farce in the old Third division...then came Big Jack. Wouldn't have missed any of those games for a gold pig. We played awful and was managed poorly by second raters that had us crying in our beer. But we are Wednesday and we kept going through the bad times and the.....erm....not so good times. Chairman, owners and their suits all come and go but we are always there because it's our Sheffield Wednesday and always will be. Apologies...getting carried away here. Could have been a night match early in the 68 season Rob. No segregation then, we were on the side terrace, then after half time the entire Trent end seemed to be by the side of us, then the battle commenced.
Frazzlebeak
We weren’t very good but it was all I knew and I was young and daft and loved every minute of it. Wish I could say the same about football in general now.

No wonder we nearly went bankrupt.
