SiJ
He's referring to Phil Gartside who was the original proponent. That's not to say there won't be mutiny among the clubs.
casbahowl
The amount of people on here that hang on every word from Nixon and treat it as gospel is both remarkable & sad in equal measure! 1
sweetsheri
Gartside wasn’t in favour of PL2. He wanted to end relegation 2 different things

sheffsteel
Remember the PL and the EFL answer to their membership clubs. Why would any PL club vote to lose their share of the tv money and give it to clubs in a PL2? Gartside concerns were the financial problems facing any relegated club but parachute payments were brought in for that. EFL clubs can’t decide to form a PL2...it must be agreed by the owners of the PL clubs and you would need to come up with a long list as to why it’s more beneficial to those clubs compared to now. sheffsteel
The real problem is that PL and the EFL are 2 separate organisations that treat each other like competitors. Money is the driver behind everything. They have no interest in the bigger picture unless they have no choice.

True....you would need to approach the owners of PL clubs who currently make 120 mill a year plus about 70 million in parachute (relegation protection) payments Your business plan would need to convince the PL clubs that they will gain x, y and z if they allow the PL to increase from 20 clubs to 40 clubs, incorporating a new PL2 league. The only possibility of a PL2 is if there’s a major re-organisation forced on the PL because the big 6 leave to join a European super league....can’t see it happening though. That's my point, it only happens if there is money to be made from introducing a pl2. If it disadvantages anyone further up the food chain then it won't happen. wellbeaten-the-owl
The argument that will swing it will be the reduction of premier League to 18 clubs from 20 with a 20 team PL2 below. The big clubs will approve as it will give them less games and more opportunities abroad. Rest I'll like it as more of a safety net in PL2 What's left of EFL will end up being semi professional as TV money will disappear. SiJ
The EFL would be fooked if enough Championship teams tried and successfully broke away from the rest. Only reasons they get any sort of TV deal is because of the Championship. A bit like the top European clubs/top PL clubs, the threat of a potential breakaway will probably be used to make those at the top of the EFL bend to the whims of the bigger Championship sides. camffiti
If a PL2 were to happen, it would probably just be the Prem split into 2 So the 'big' clubs wont have to play any of the plebby clubs ... Leaving time for mid season breaks / trips to friendly tournaments in Qatar
