Yes, top of the League then we played Arsenal away on the Monday night.

Hirst hit the bar (fastest recorded shot on Sky)? - then Des Walker got sent off and we lost 4-1 (4-0)?

All above is from memory - could be wrong.

I thought it was Chelsea...but I could be equally as wrong.

he only went to left back when he had been out of the team forever and we were on the bones of our backside.

he was never gonna be a striker at a decent level which is why he spent most of his career at Hartlepool.

superb 3 game spell - never did much after that.

You tend not to be able to do much when you are played out of position for an age just because you are the last man standing with a decent left foot.

he only played left back when we were relegated from the premier league - he made 7 appearances for us after we were relegated.

nobody ruined Ritchie Humphreys he just found his level and made a good career for himself.

Was an exciting world beater or so it seemed for a brief spell. In pre-season and for the first few games of that season we somehow raced into leading the top flight title race for the opening few games many years ago. Although he seemed to disappear after that impressive start, he had a long career in the lower Leagues.

We lost 2-0 at home to Chelsea having won the first 4 but we were still top after that defeat. We then lost 4-1 at Highbury.

He hit the ground running for us in 1996-97 but to my memory he never played left-back for us in the PL so hardly played in that position for an age.

another homegrown lad  who didn't endear himself to our supporters, seem to recall he got some right stick  in the league cup win over the blunts ….had a career that lasted 20 years so must have been half decent

He was abysmal in that game, might as well have had a blunts shirt on as he was verging on being their best player, made Paul Devlin look like Paul Gascoigne. Think he got subbed at half-time.

Seem to remember it being Devlin that made him look like a mug but either way he had an absolute shocker.

He was a cracking player. Would have been the best striker in World football, Van Basten said so, but Pleat ruined him.

Pleat dropped him when the lad was at the peak of his form as a Carbone type of player, he then lost his confidence, got pissed about by Pleat having to play as a defender, and never regained the form he would’ve continued with had he remained up front.

At least he never wore beige slip on shoes like Pleat though, nor skipped about in them on the pitch like a fairy, like Pleat did.

ps - I wasn’t much of a David Pleat fan.

That Leicester win that made it 4 wins from 4 put us 5 points clear at the top of the Premier League (temporarily, because it was played a day before the rest of the league played their round of games that midweek). We then only won 2 of the next 16 league games - the most Wednesday thing ever.

Am I right in saying that Humphreys was singled out by Marco Van Basten after a pre season game as a potential world beater.

No, that's an urban myth. Van Basten wasnt even there. Johan Cruyff was asked about Humphreys after he'd scored in a pre-season game in Holland (In Van Basten's home town of Utrecht). He said he'd played well and could have a bright future, which was then misquoted/mangled by the journalists and became Cruyff saying that Humphreys was the new Van Basten!

To be fair we probably drew loads of those games. We went something like 22 games unbeaten in the middle of that season, but drew most of them.

Humphreys had one person who was pushing him,  Chris Waddle.   Waddle thought a lot of Humphreys and often had him back after sessions to do one on one coaching.

Pleat didn't like Waddle's influence in the camp and got rid of him early in that season, and with that he also consigned Humphreys to bit part play.
