End of a decade - Who got the assists?

Recommended Posts

A little note on what classifies as an assist... this list has a more generous interpretation than a lot of the websites like WhoScored where they take it from the Opta data and is very much based on who got the final touch before it went to the player who scored.

These numbers are more in line with the FPL Fantasy Football game, that have what, in my view, is a more sensible interpretation of an assist. I.e:

1) if you win a penalty and the penalty is scored, that's an assist (unless the player who wins the penalty then takes the penalty)

2) if you hit a shot that the keeper saves but can't hold, and another player knocks it in, that's an assist

3) if you put in a dangerous cross, a defender gets a faint touch on it, but it still finds a man in the box, that's an assist

4) However, if you put in a cross, it gets cleared and significantly changes direction, and then someone scores, that's not an assist.

To show what this looks like in practice:

1) vs Bristol last week, Atdhe Nuhiu gets and assist for winning a penalty

2) vs Stoke on Boxing Day, for the Tom Lees goal, Sam Winnall gets an assist as his header was tipped on to the bar leaving Lees with a simple finish

3) vs Fulham, Nuhiu's last minute diving header, Harris beat his man and put in a dangerous cross towards Nuhiu, the defender got a flick on it, but Nuhiu still got on the end of it

(None of these 3 scenarios would count as assists on WhoScored)

For number 4, take John Sheridan's Dink goal in the cup final - this goal wouldn't have an assist, as Nigel Worthington's cross was headed clear in a different direction.

Is anyone else looking at Bannans number of assists and thinking its rather low? For someone whos played 181 times and who has been the main focal point of almost everything we do, i cant help feel its a lot lower than it should be.

Big fan of the lad, just shocked its so low. Nuhiu also seems to come out of all these stats threads quite well lol.

He's become more productive as he's gone on. In his first season with us, he played 41 games and only got 3 assists (Wallace got 12 that season, and I think took the majority of the set pieces).

As Wallace faded out of the team and Bannan has become more integral his number of assists has gone up - 14 last season, 8 so far this season.

His 14 assists last season was the most in a season for us in the Championship (Lines did get 15 one year, but that was in League One).

47 goals and 26 assists. Also made more appearances than anyone else. May not be many fans player of the decade if any but he's been an influential player regardless of anyone's opinion of Atdhe Nuhiu.

Influential in us being a mid table championship side for his entire time with us......or has that escaped your notice?

47 goals in over six years for a striker, and an average of around 3 assists a season. Come off it

Thanks for that info. Was honestly expecting it to have been higher. This also shows what a reliance we have had on him. Cut Bannan out of the game and you close Wednesday down.

Them stats do also reveal that we really need some better midfielders and also need the wingbacks to kick in with more assists.

Doesn't matter we're we've finished. It's a matter over the decade who's been influential for us and your favourite player arguably has been? WTF::tango:garymegson:ghoulguy:lol

Did those 2 seasons (plus this one so far) where we finished in the play-offs escape your notice?

At the end of every season there are 3 positions worth mentioning.....those who go up, those who go down and everyone else is mid table

Influencing what is the issue though.......there’s nothing to be proud of in what Nuhiu has influenced

I'd like to take one poster for a series of Rorschach tests. Do you think he'd just maniacally yell "NUHIU" at the top of his lungs, foaming at the mouth at every single one of them no matter what it looked like?

So it appears now that Nuhiu is the sole cause of our mediocrity over the last decade.

Swivel-eyed loon.
