Westwood

Recommended Posts

It might seem reactionary (although, mistakes week after week, make that argument a tad weaker), but there is no doubt, there is serious, glaring issues creeping into Westwood's performances.

He's declining. That's natural, he's getting on, and he's not the fittest specimen we've ever had either, with the number of injuries he's had perhaps catching up with him.

And despite his decrease in performances, there's no getting away what a fantastic servant he's been for us.

However, a criticism labelled at the club for a number of years, has been the inability to see a depreciating asset and plan for it. Westwood now falls into this category. And there has to be a serious consideration by Monk, to think long term. Whether that's Dawson, Wildsmith or if he feels neither of those two are up to it, A. N. Other. But, the goalkeeping situation is going to need addressing...soon.

It makes little sense to keep playing a 35 year old goalkeeper who continues to make regular game changing mistakes. The rumours of Dawson potentially leaving for nothing is another worrying sign. There's little point producing these promising youngsters, if we block their development...even when the experienced incumbent isn't performing.

And regarding yesterday's goal, of course, the source of the issue comes from Palmer. Palmer does his job, and the penalty doesn't happen. But, there's no getting away from the fact, Westwood has made yet another rash decision. The challenge took place on the edge of the box, wide of the goal. It was a rash and careless decision. No getting away from that.

Great keeper up to 2 years ago then agility has fallen off a cliff as well his confidence in coming out towards players and also his catching. Looks lightweight. Add in his always awful distribution and these days he's a just good championship keeper but at most other higher end clubs would be a bench warmer.

Good grief don’t know how he gets a game according to you !! .

yes we were but when it got to the final third, we was poor. Fletch is a one man army and he should be. FF is a match winner and he would thrive off fletch

Not disagreeing that Nando shouldn’t be getting game time but Fletcher and Nando have never looked like a partnership together.

2 defensive errors and Westwood gets the criticism.

First goal, pass splits the centre backs and the guys away so he has to come out.

Second goal, Palmer stands appealing for offside instead of playing the ball.

But hey, only my take on it.

The fact that Palmer made a poor error doesn't mean that Westwood then has to compound it with another poor error (second goal, don't think he did much wrong for the first)

The mental knots people are willing to tie themselves in to absolve him of any blame are quite remarkable

Westwood or not...Monk got it wrong!!! 1 up top just isn’t happening

Thought yesterday’s set up was fine. 1 up didn’t work in previous games as fletch would be the only one. But yesterday men were getting into the box at times 4-5 men in there box which we never had before. Although it left us exposed on the counter it caused a very good WBA side problems.

Weaker sides we shall hammer hopefully.

Reality is, if we have ambitions of being a premier league team and were somehow able to get promoted, we don't have a premier league standard keeper. We're going to need to replace them all as Dawson will never make it at that level unfortunately and Westwood will be too old and past it to be number 1.

So it's just about who is more likely to get us in the top 6 so we can have a roll of the dice at getting there. Wouldn't write Westwood off just yet for that, people are forgetting he was immense back half of last season and the clean sheet % was as good as 2014-2017 with him in goal. So has he completely lost his ability in the last 6 months... seems unlikely. There are players in front of him e.g. Palmer who are gifting chances away every week.

That said, he's on a bad run of form which means he should be dropped to the bench and Dawson given a chance to stake his claim. That might be just what's needed to raise his performance levels.

Fair comment.

My point was if Palmer does what he should do the situation doesn't arise but yeah lack of judgement by Westwood also.

For me that second goal is 50% Palmers fault, 25% Iorfa (Palmer wasn't the only one who stopped and didn't play to the whistle) and 25% Westwood.

Westwood is caught out and has to try and atone for Palmer/Iorfa's original error - but I think he's too half hearted after that. If he had really committed and gone in to punch the ball clear, flying in with a fist at head height I think he would have won the ball first. Then the collision with the attacker would have been a foul on him. Alternatively he could pull out and hope the attackers touch will take him too wide. But instead he did neither, challenging but not really challenging - he was asking to concede a penalty the way he went in with his body and waiting for the ball to come to him. I get that it all happened very quickly, but also this isn't the first game this season he's looked hesitant and cost us points.

I’ve been Westwood’s biggest fan and he’s been brilliant for Wednesday, but he needs dropping!

I want to see Monk being ruthless dropping the likes of Westwood for individual mistakes and also addressing our mental fragility. Palmer should also spend some time out of the team after his suspension.
