Tactics and game management.

Recommended Posts

It seems to be the current strategy to start games safely but solid defensively, slowly work our way into the game and then try to nick something.

Too often we allow the opposition to take the initiative and do not assert ourselves going forward early enough in the game.

Since Monk arrived , we are now much much better defensively. Does that give us more scope to be more offensive and look to dominate teams from the start and go all out for ten or fifteen minutes instead of being so cagey? Make the opposition worry about defending.

Our porcine friends across the city go for the jugular from the first whistle and did this every game last season and tbf are doing the same in the PL.

There is something to be said for this approach. It unsettles the opposition, breeds confidence in the players and gives them an edge over the opposition from the off.

Should we be more positive in our approach??

You have to have the players to do it.

We seem to fall between two stools cos we can possibly do either...but not adequately cos we haven't got the players.

If for instance you want to actually "Go for it"..Pelupessy should never start in front of Forestieri, and why in the name of all thats holy shouldn't we "Go for it" against Blackburn?

Leeds ?...fair enough..West Brom...fair enough...but like Mowbray said about us....right back at him

Murphy gets a goal and all of a sudden its how do we fit him in..When he's bloody consistent is when...he strolls through some games.

Why on earth can't he have the same commitment as such as Fox..Who has taken almighty stick at times, but gives everything every time he's picked...same with Borner, Iorfa, Palmer, Hutch...notice something?

ALL defensive minded.

Who have we up front like that?

Fletcher and maybe Nuhiu.

Our most creative player is Bannan who's role at times is simply to cover for others...Its not gonna work all the time

unfortunately our  ' porcine neighbours ' seem to be much fitter , quicker and together than we are . Hence why they can go at teams from the off . We dont have enough pace and dont seem to have the mentality to get at the oppos for a full 90 mins .

I agree. But I ask why!?

I know our problems over the last few seasons have extended beyond the playing staff. My concern is this is not being recognised and addressed. When wilder took over at the lane he looked at the whole setup. One thing he changed which I think has had the biggest impact is that up to that point the development squads didn't interact with the senior team, trained at different times, socialised in different rooms. He effectively knocked down the walls and told them all they are part of a club from U18 to the first teamers. They train, eat and socialise as a club. That builds aspirations for the young 'uns and also allows the seniors to mentor and set an example for them.

That has built togetherness, they succeed or fail as a club...not a team. You can see that on the pitch. He got average players working their rounduns off for each other.

We need to emulate this somehow. I could never be a blade, but I envy the fact they have wilder at the helm.

fair play to utd so far, doing very well, good times to be a blade

They play the underdog and get the siege mentality going.....don't they..?

F.ook me, with all the crap we go through, we should trot out like f.ookin' Vikings at Lindisfarne...wadda we do?

"Would you rather England won the Rugby world cup or 3 points at Blackburn"?

That went well

Its a mindset, the players don't have it ...............and us supporters?

Martyrs to our own self pity and no wonder....

Its like being repeatedly hit over the head...

When we went on that run under Jones, after we had frothed about Megson getting the sack..I thought .."Its turned here"...I honestly thought it had turned.

Then Jones suddenly becomes a cross between Mother Theresa and Ghandi..and we put the sandles back on.

Wednesday fans anger is almost exclusively turned against either each other or the team..Lets start loathing every f.ooker else...just for a few months

Up to us scoring yesterday we were very poor, as poor as at Preston, Hull or at home to QPR. Some players may as well have stayed in Sheffield as their contribution was zero.

The fans are now beginning to realise that this squad of players have little or no ambition other than being very well paid and buying yet another very expensive car. I worry about the remainder of this season, the signs are not good. This job maybe too difficult for Monk.

Yes, but not sure we're good enough going forward or have the ability to keep possession of the ball.

Probably true against the top teams like Leeds, Swansea, WBA

But otherwise I disagree. Why should we not be able to do those basics against lesser teams, or struggling teams.

The one thing they should be able to do is keep possession even if offering no threat to their goal.

If what you say is true our players aren't working hard enough. If you can't string three passes together and play it simply to retain possession at a minimum then we are in trouble. Too many times we make poor teams look like Barca.

We've struggled to keep possession against most teams this season so that must tell you that we are not good enough at keeping the ball. It may be the tactics, not sure. Even your last sentence acknowledges this fact. Not sure from your post whether you agree or disagree as it seems a bit contradictory.

We'll, you're right. It is contradictory. A point well made. SWFC has been a contradiction for years. We expect to be in the top flight simply because we are the massive yet seem to fail to lay the foundation for that to happen, in all areas.

I don't believe our players lack the ability to perform better than they are. Could be the tactics, but it doesn't seem to matter which manager we have, the players underperform or perform inconsistently. So is it mindset or mental application... Dunno. Maybe they are too comfortable. I'd like to see what someone like Alex Ferguson would make of our team.

Again I point to bumhole stain. Their league 1 team that won promotion to the championship was largely the same team that has just gone on to the PL. I believe desire from the players the manager and the fans played the biggest part in their success. They don't have overpaid superstars as Mardiola reminded us all last season, but somehow supposed average players performed consistently.

The blades aren't getting relegated this season. They built momentum which could be sustained, same as wolves the season before. We have to plan five years in advance, spend wisely and build the right team to compete both in the championship and the PL

Ultimately, the chairman has to decide what he wants. Does he want to build from the ground up like they did at the lane over the last five or six years, from the finances, the facilities to the manager, staff and players. OR chance squeaking a playoff win resulting in the need to spend big to compete or flirt with relegation ( a likely outcome. Possibly a tactic to benefit from the parachute payment)

I would rather have a team of mediocre players with the potential to improve and grow, who play consistently well to their level as a strong unit with togetherness, no frills but a deep desire to achieve. It's much easier to incrementally improve the squad from that position.

We've waited this long for success and I think we need to be patient for a few more seasons for someone to do it properly.

I think you hit the nail right on the head when you asked ,"are the players too comfortable?"  With a lot of them out of contract next summer you'd be expecting them to bust a gut to get a new contract. Seems like some of them are expecting to be re-signed no matter how well they play.

'our porcine friends across the city' have a much younger side than us.

unfortunately the gap between us and Utd has never been bigger...still think we have the players to have a right go ..but our approach to games is shyte,,too defensive..attack is the best form of defense..Monk's team's dont play like that....with this ageing side this is their last chance...too old after this season..imo
