Iorfa for England?

Recommended Posts

A few weeks ago someone posted that Iorfa would be in the England set up soon. I'm not sure if the statement was in jest, a wind up, or genuine, but I rubbished it.

I take it back. He's still some way off, but I can see him being considered in 12-18 months if he continues his recent improvement.

I'm not his greatest fan: he has too many mistakes in him for my liking, but he is immense. Not just for his bread and butter headed clearances, but pace and recovery, his tackling, his blocks, and his covering for fullbacks. And a few goals. He's becoming our best centre back for years. I stress "becoming", but his stupid mistakes are getting less frequent and with Monk's guidance on the training pitch, and Borner/Hutch on a match day, he is becoming one of, if not the, best in the league. Remember the much admired Michael Hector? Not a patch on Iorfa.

If he stay injury free and continues to develop he could well be in the premier league next season. Hopefully with us. And when in the Prem, is he worse than Tomori or Mings? Based on what we saw of those two last season, he's better. Given half a season in the top league, he should be ahead of Keane and challenging Stones. Whilst I don't think Iorfa is developing into the next Sol Cambell, the paucity of truly talented English centre backs makes me think that Iorfa is heading toward the quality that now merits an England call up.

His only big downside ( and where most of his mistakes come from) is his ability on the ball when we try to play from the back. Unfortunately that might limit his opportunities at a higher level, but I can see the likes of Everton, Burnley, Bournemouth taking a chance on him.

You're not his greatest fan but you think he could play for England... Okaaay

Owlstalk has a rich tradition of calling international honours for our championship players. It's weird.

He is playing well, I think he will cement his place in the team over Tom Lees. But England? Come on. He's not even the best centre back at the club.

If he was good enough for England he wouldn't be playing for us!

Harry Maguire wasn't good enough for England when he played for the Pigs in the third tier. But he had the potential.

Smalling wasn't good enough for England when he played for Fulham. But he had potential and developed into an England player, albeit the alternatives were poor.

Ditto Ferdinand at West Ham, Mings at Ipswich, even whilst at Bournemouth. Etc.

Ditto for Iorfa.

Not good enough for England just now, but with the crap alternatives and 18 months improvement, especially with a move to he premier league, he might well be.

FFS threads like this are embarrassing.

Perhaps.

But not at the same level as the threads that constantly belittle our own players even when they put in decent performances. And sometimes excellent performances. That's embarrassing.

Continue this form over a season, then who knows - stranger things have happened.

He clearly prefers to play at CB and that's where he seems to play better for us, so i'd probably advocate him staying there - but I won't get ahead of myself.    If he progresses, maintains form etc, all the better for Wednesday no matter what level he attains ultimately for himself.

I do wonder if he may be pushed a little further forward once we are back at full strength in the CB position though, he has energy to burn and would be a better option in that position when Hutchinson isn't in contention to Pelupessy.

Agree with you here but as for 'Dom for England' it's fantasy island stuff.

But I guess if you look at the likes of John Stones, the money he's gone for etc. anything is possible, just can't see it.

There was suggestion not too long ago that Adam Reach is England quality as well.

Before that it was Tom Lees being England standard.

There's also been suggestions that Westwood was good enough to play champions league and that top end premier league clubs would be interested in Bannan and Forestieri.

Not too long ago some were slating Iorfa on here. Don't get carried away with a few good performances.

He will be the best one at the club if he isn’t already. Prem teams love the athleticism, and he’s young still

Well that's partly my point.

Iorfa has been good, but England standard?

No way can I see Iorfa ever being half as good Terry or Ferdinand or Southgate or Campbell or Pallister etc. But ask yourself these questions:

If he carries on playing and improving as he has done, will he be good enough for a Prem team to come in for him next summer?

Are Tyrone Mings and Michael Keane that much better than Iorfa? Would a few months at EPL level be enough for Iorfa to bridge the gap between him and Mings/Keane and bring him up to current England standard?

The state of England's central defenders is so poor, I don't think it's fanciful to think that in 18 months, with continued dominant performances, Iorfa could be being mention for a possible call up.

Ask yourself if prem clubs love athleticism etc why did wolves let him leave for a pittance?

Things can change.. didn’t pull up any trees on loan at Ipswich by all accounts playing centre back. Probably they were going to release at the end of his contract so thought it better to sell for a small fee

the way he’s played this season though, would imagine prem teams will be taking note. Key is, he’s done it for 8 games.. needs to do it for the full season

I have witnessed players for us playing top flight football having played for us in the third tier, and they did well.    Irish instantly comes to mind.   Other players we signed from lower league who did well, didn't we get Pearson from Shrewsbury or somewhere like that?    Bougherra we didn't sign from lower but went on to better things.

It's not beyond the realm of possibility for Iorfa to do this too.
