Prolific striker needed if we are serious about going up

Recommended Posts

Thought that we had an embarrassment of riches in that department... Winnall, not sure what he’s capable of, Rhodes, flippin mystery what’s happened to him, Joao, sold and now isn’t even in the Reading match day squad !

Oh for the days when we had Bannister and Varadi in the same team .... every week... bliss.

You suggesting we bring them out of retirement?  Might just work.

I wonder if Joao thought he’d made it again and then lost his mojo.

A straight 7m we got for him.

We don’t necessarily need a prolific striker - and unless we’re really lucky  we won’t get one without spending a lot of money. Fletcher has been superb this season as well.

We need more goals from our Central midfielders.

luongo has started well - over recent years the rest of the contributions in terms of goals from the likes of bannan, lee, Hutchinson, pelupessy, Lopez, abdi and whoever else has played there is really poor.

We don't create many chances relative to expectations of a side in the championship top eight.

That in part is a function of our lack of options up front because top forwards make chances (they don't just wait for "service", to use the weird phrase you sometimes see). But it's more a function of our creativity. The long term issue that we have B-grade full backs is important here.

If and it's obviously a big if if we can get an extended run from FF of the quality we say four years ago, then perhaps we can sustain a challenge

I wouldn’t say prolific striker is needed. I think we need some pace off the front, would add another dimension to our play as well as some more goals. Come January I would use the loan market, someone like Vydra who can’t get a game at Burnley would be perfect.

There could be league 1 or 2 strikers to do a job in this league but just not given the chance, or lower end championship strikers in struggling sides who may score a hatful in a good side and not cost the world. Charlton signed Bonne from Leyton Orient and he's scored 4 goals in 5 games, he was playing in the conference last season. That's some leap and to score 4 in 5 against Leeds, Fulham, Derby and Bristol is some going. How much do you reckon Woodrow would cost at Barnsley? He's doing very well this season

This is an issue, we limit ourselves to the type of goals we can score. So many goals are scored through the middle, with the forwards running clear, breaking the lines, or from cute passes down the side of the centre backs We rarely score this type of goal Yes, Fernando will help with this aspect, but a big bustling centre forward, and two out and out wingers, is far too basic.

Bannan gets a bit of stick on here, but in truth, we are unable to make the most of his passing range, with nobody making those clever runs

Woodrow is a good shout. Barnsley clearly a selling club under new owners, sold their key centre halves Pinnock and Lindsay for £3m and £2m. So you’d have to imagine above £3m
