Prolific striker needed if we are serious about going up

Recommended Posts

I think we need a striker who is going to put away 20+ goals for us this season if we are going to make a proper push at going up or making the play off.Look at Norwich last season they had Pukki who shot them to the premier league, is there anyone out there who you think we could seriously go and get and do a proper jog for us, seeing as now we are putting the balls into the right place.

I don't disagree, however we don't have a pot to pee in at present and 20+ goals a season strikers don't come cheap.

Do you reckon Bruce will have got over the poo we gave him to lend us Gayle?

I'd say you need a certain amount of goals in season rather than a prolific goalscorer, although it obviously helps.

Somebody on here will have worked out an average of what's needed to go up I'm sure. If not I'm disappointed by the lack of anorak-age.

I think they'll  need him in the championship next season mate.

Either that, or get a wide forward type in the Harris mould, less so the Murphy mould, who can break in behind opposition defences.

Or...hope we get Nando firing and playing on a consistent basis.

Two ways of doing it, replace Fletcher with a more mobile target man, who can score you 20+ goals, or replace the wingers with wide attackers who will score 20 between them. At the moment, we have a non prolific target man, and wingers who don’t score, or not at the level we require

Fletch is a 10 - 15 goal a season man imo. He's on course to get that this season.

Does a great job winning his flick ons and linking play up, but he's nearly 33 now?

Big ask to expect him to keep up these levels of performance with how grueling the Championship is.

For me, you get some more legs around him. A wide forward type (very much the in thing these days) and encourage the likes of Luongo and Bannan to support Fletch when we are playing the ball up to him. Otherwise, his hard work is wasted.

Pretty we need to see FF back and firing on all cylinders to have any chance

Also need a new left back, and a back up keeper so Dawson can go on loan

I've deconstructed this theory many times in the past. Having a prolific scorer is no guarantee of anything (ask Blackburn in the Jordan Rhodes years) and in fact many teams are promoted without one. Indeed, we nearly did it twice under Carvalhal with a modest number as our leading scorer.

With our current set up, Fletcher is more than doing his bit. A bigger problem is a lack of threat from just about everyone except him.

He’s only doing his bit if that’s all you expect from your lone striker Fine if you’ve go a three behind him who will get 30 between them, or two wide attackers, who will guarantee 20+

Pukki wasn't a 20+ goal a season striker either when they signed him.

So basically, we just need to find a striker who's not had a prolific scoring career who we can therefore get on the cheap but is guaranteed to come good and score 29 goals next season like Pukki did. No pressure then Garry...

This is very true.

Midfield and even defence have to be contributing a few goals.

Tbf, Luonogo seems to be stepping up in that regard, but Bannan, Reach and Harris have to be doing more.

We also need a few more from Big Dom and Borner.

You reckon we're in a strong position to find someone who not only will do all the graft that Fletcher gives us, but also score appreciably more? He's the best (only?) option we have for this system and will likely remain so until at least next summer. Even then, such a player would not be easy to find because everyone wants one.

Didn't Monkfish manage to get Leeds up there & challenging for months with just Wood up top? He knows how to set a team up to play to one striker.
