Its why we are doing better...most of our youngsters - god love em - are not up to this standard

Not that we did anything to bring them up the standard, though.

We are cr*p at developing talent into proper players.

Promotion to the PL should be top priority, but it is a travesty how much we are neglecting production and development of young players within the club.

Especially now with FFP in place it was never more important to produce players and create value.

Are any of better than the first team squad

the simple fact is our u23 players are just not good enough , a lot are just making the numbers up and they will leave and either play semi pro level or find another line of work . only connor grant to what ive been told will make it or at least have the best chance of been a decent footballer . our best 2 of recent times to come through ,dawson and wildsmith careers have stalled especially the latter . id love to see young lads coming through to the 1st team it used to happen here a very long time ago late 1970s , since then only odd ones have come through to have a fairly decent career as a footballer ,this needs addressing , why aint we got anyone from the premier league? don't they trust us with there young players?

That's the problem. Chansiris needs to be receptive to loaning the players out  . Borokov and hunt need to be playing mens football.

Look at Thorniley and baker - not even featuring!

SWFC need to look after their youngsters before they're poached elsewhere!

Other clubs simply might not be interested

Hunt is a player. Just physically needs more time. Borokov? Not sure where he deserves a chance. A few headlines playing against obscure international teams at U17/U19 level but his record at U23 level isn't all that:

Period Club Country Current/Last Matches Goals
2018 (Jul) - Now Sheffield Wednesday FC - U23 England  England   38 9

Been on the bench recently for the U23's and pretty sure he's not scored for them this season. He's a big unit. Maybe a stint out on loan might be the answer but looks a bit over hyped to me.

Wouldn't surprise me if Grant gets some minutes this season. Particularly in the FA cup. Not seen anything of Dawodu this season. Not fit? He's the other youngster to keep an eye on IMHO.

The club have a few decent lads under 20 so it's not all bleak.

Obviously I don't know how much has been spent on the academy but when you think it was Dave Jones who first wanted to improve the youth set up, it's a little disappointing that it hasn't really produced anyone for the first team yet.

Thorniley was from another academy and he's been the closest. Penney out on loan as are one or two others and we all know what happened with George Hirst. Whilst the academy has done well at the level they play, we are still waiting for genuine talent to be knocking on the door of the first team.

From the feedback I’m getting, from the U23s Grant, Hunt, Dawodu and Rice have the best chance of making it. That doesn’t rule out others stepping up, as players develop at different speeds.

Despite the club saying it was their aim to take a different approach, they haven’t. We go on about Carlos signing older players, but that was the clubs project. It’s still the same now, practically all the players we sign, are of a similar age to the players Carlos signed. Three years on, they too will be pushing thirty

Nowt wrong with giving them contracts up to being 30 just dont give them long contracts once they reach that age  .those we signed in the summer are at an age where they should be at the peak of there careers and you more or less know what they can do ....the type of young lads who we could attract are more of a gamble especially as we'd have to pay decent money{  that we probably can't do }for them .

We probably need to mix things up a bit though, or we end up with a squad full of thirtysomethings that we have to replace en masse

I  may be wrong but dont think chansiri worries too much about 3 years hence and building a side .let's be realistic if we arnt challenging for promotion in the next two seasons monk won't be here for the 3rd ..its suicide for a manager to try and build a team with young players as jos found out .

The average age of the players we've been signing has unquestionably come down since CC left, and by an appreciable amount.

Under him we signed multiple players who were 30+ (or close) at the time of signing; Wallace, Abdi, David Jones, Pudil, Sougou, Turner, McGeady, Fletcher, Boyd, and Emanuelson.

And since CC left we've not signed one player over 30, with the single exception of Paul Jones as cover for a 3rd choice keeper, and otherwise, Börner at 28 has been the oldest.

Of the other signings, that in 3 years, “they too will be pushing 30” is only relevant from the viewpoint of resale value and DC still seems to need to get comfortable with the idea of selling players anyway. When he does, then signing players at 26, developing them for 2 seasons and selling them on at 28 before they enter the final year of their contract ought to be reasonable model to follow while ever generating money from player-sales is a necessity (which it clearly is for us).

It’s not misleading in the slightest. We have nobody under the age of 23 playing in our first team and we’re the only club in country where that’s the case. I don’t think it’s the end of the world, but it does highlight the main problem of the Chansiri era; we’ve bought a lot of older players, on big wages with no re-sale value.

Not an issue with the Chansiri era, it's the hangover from the decades of under-investment that was first brought up when Milan came in. We had 1 scout in total, zero working locally and could barely put out an u23 squad. The investment that has been put in recently has resulted in our u18s becoming national champions last season, but many of those players are 16 and 17, nowhere near developed or ready for first team football. We won't see the fruits of DC's investments for another couple of seasons I would imagine, but there is potential for those numbers to change quite drastically in 21/22 and beyond.

In terms of contracts, Penney's expires on 30th June 2020, which is his loan contract expiry date at St Pauli. I assume we'll need to make a decision on him by January or he's a free agent.

Dawson and Baker's contracts also expire next June and Thorniley has another year till June 2021.

Borokov not scored this season and last season didn't score at all until the last game of the season when he got a double. Hardly pulling up trees. Can see him being released at the end of the season.
